In the XIV century, the good beers were called Goudale, Goudalle or Good Ale. There were sold for 2 deniers a pot at a merchant called Goudalier.

I found this one tucked away in a cupdboard. It may be a biere de garde but I had unfortunately gardee'd it for 5 years past the best before date. Nonetheless, it was still quite drinkable. Poured entrirely flat with no head but developed a petillant spritz on the palate. Curious muted apricot colour, no doubt due the length of time in bottle and not entirely clear. Nose was appley/cidery/citric, with slight vinous and malty undertones. Quite clean and sharp on the palate, with some sweetness. The sharpness lingered on the finish long after other flavours had subsided. All in all though, surprisingly pleasant for a beer 5 years out of date. Must get some more and re-rate when fresher. Bottle, December 2003. RE-RATE: One hour later and nearing the bottom of the 750ml bottle and I have indigestion already. The acidic/cidery character no doubt contributed. Deduct one point.

Great beer, strong, bitter lots off hops and a bit sweet. Tanks to John who gave it to me.

Pale golden colour. A sweet and very yeasty Biere de Garde. Too much yeast and too little fruit for my liking.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2005 Frothy, light amber in color. Quite a lot of carbonation, but nice when poured hard into the glass. The body is smooth, but the aroma and flavour is really boring. The flavour landscape is too monotonous for this to be an interesting beer.

Clear amber, creamy white head, lace. Aroma is a bit metallic, malty with hints of caramel. Starts caramelly then metallic notes in the finish (typical bière de garde). Decent malty background. Similar to Jenlain Ambrée but not so tasty.

Ah, Goudale. The definition of the bad Biere de Garde. This pours a highly carbonated yellow into a giant chemical head. The head settles and you sample the nose and are slightly offended by the salty French "special malts" that catch your nose and you think you are tasting a mixture of salty Nord-Pas de Calais factory fumes, a cow field, and that patiserie next to that Turk restaurant in Maubeuge that nevertheless tempted you with doughy delights each time you passed under its crusty facade. That is to say that this beer isn’t all that bad --like Nord-Pas de Calais is bearable with a cute girl on the coast in July-- but it is still bad. The alcohol is annoyingly prevalent for no apparent reason, as it supplements what is basically all grains and a complete absence of balance in the hops. The defines "super-fermented" malt-liquor that is norther French beer.

Golden. White head. Floral fresh aroma followed my malty sweet aroma and typical french perfumy dishwater finish.

Amber of color with a white head. An aroma with malt, apricot and honey. Light sweet malt flavor, notes of hops.

500 ml can: poured golden yellow with a quickly fading medium sized white ehad. Mild grain and yeast aroma with a hint of banana. The first sip of this thing made me want to pour it down the drain. It was quite metallic and somewhat bitter. The alcohol seemed overwhelming. Subsequent sips the metallic taste toned down. Still that alcohol is coming through more than I like. Yeast, banana, grain, some sourness, and alcohol in the flavor. I’ll avoid it next time.
