In the XIV century, the good beers were called Goudale, Goudalle or Good Ale. There were sold for 2 deniers a pot at a merchant called Goudalier.

Bottle, 330ml. A golden colour with a medium-sized white head. A sweet, hoppy aroma. Flavour is kinda hoppy, with some honey and yeast notes. Not bad, but I was expecting much more flavour from a beer with such high ABV. This is however the best French beer I’ve had, mostly because the others I’ve tried have been barely drinkable.

75cl bottle. Pours a clear gold with a small white head. Cereals aroma of yeast and grain. Flavour is plain grain, some grass. Nothing stands out in this beer.

Gayant Goudale Pours medium gold with a medium long lasting white head. Aroma of bananas and bread with some white wine and a slight herby grassiness. Flavor is yeasty and bready with a dry finish. Slightly metallic, but that waned as it warmed. Not a standout.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget and consumed on October 7. Pours a clear deep golden colour with a big white head that dissipates rather quickly while leaving lots of traces on the glass. Smell is sweet, malty and a little stale. It’s rather subtle but I can detect honey, grass, spices and bread. Taste is very metallic with lots of iron. It’s slightly sweet and rather malty with some dried fruit and yeast. Finish is dry and metallic.

Bottle was a gift from my mam & dad’s holiday to France. Golden coloured with a sweet and slight spicy fruity flavour, vanilla? and lemon? notes with a dry fruity, warming finish.

March 2011: Cork and caged 0.75 Litre brown bottle (Lot 2699 on the cork, no best before date, anywhere). Poured into three glasses, no sediment in any of them. The body was a clear amber, almost dark, dirty gold colour, a pure white head which produced some good lacing, sat on top. The aroma was of hops and mixed spices (nutmeg and coriander?). The mouthfeel was sharp, bitter and tangy, easy to drink but more ’middle of the road’ than exciting. A non-offensive sort of beer, a little lacking in flavour: the hop content blending in and hiding too much behind the grains within the brew.

Bottled, 75cl. Golden color, with little foamy head. Aroma of malts and herbs. But taste is not what I expected. Taste was not perceptible enough. I should taste again to be sure it was not the bottle since the aroma was great...

Test vom 21.9.2009, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 11,10,9,8,11,10 - 9,70

75cl bottle from Carrefour. Great looking bottle. Poured a very appealing orange amber colour. Overall, a fairly bland ale with something of a grainy hit in the finish. A bit of yeasty spice, not much hop. Nothing wrong with this, but not quite sure what all the fuss is about - could be that it is a well balanced session ale (like De Koninck or some English bitters) which are highly drinkable and awesome if you’re brought up on the taste? But then it’s nearly 8% and not moreish enough for that. Don’t know, but it’s worth trying I guess.
