1.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 Oakes (9997) - Gibsons, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 25, 2003
I passed this over last time I was in Nova Scotia, but since I'm here twice the same year, I'm scroungin' for some new stuff to sample while I verify beers. Dull amber colour. Slightly boozy, very sugary aroma. Sugary taste. Fizzy, with grand marnier notes. Little beer character. Just another French booze/beer gimmick-ass hybrid. This beer is proof that while the French have pretensions of being tasteful, they're not. There's more good taste in a Mexican peasant's tortilla soup than in 50% of the French population's drinks of choice.

Skunky aroma with a hint of orange. Golden colour with very little head or carbonation. Light lager with very little actual beer character overshadowed completely by sickly sweet Grand Marnier fake orange flavour, Very thin body. Happy this was only a 250ml bottle. Bottle.

UPDATED: APR 30, 2003 I debated about trying this because of the $3(Cdn) price tag, for what I thought was a regular sized 330 ml bottle. But I figured, what the hell. Then I discover, after pouring and only filling my glass three quarters full, that it's only 250 ml. So already I'm thinking rip-off. And then I got a whiff. Which made me think that this beer was made by taking a skunky, green bottle, European lager and throwing in some Grand Marnier in the hopes of making palatable. Keep working on that. Pale, dull orange colour. No head. Aforementioned skunky aroma, with some orange peel and yeast. Taste is an unbalanced blend of skunked, bitter lager and orange kool-aid, but kool-aid that has started to ferment somehow. Thin, syrupy, almost sticky mouthfeel.

After drinking something called Champale(?) years ago I vowed never again to drink one of those flavoured beers. But since I really like Grand Marnier I thought I'd give this one a shot. I was right, I should stay away from flavoured beer. Beer and GM just don't go well together. This beer pours with no head. It has a bit of an alcohol, orange aroma and has a taste of bad beer mixed with a bit of Grand Marnier. Seems like an awful waste of a good liqueur

UPDATED: APR 19, 2004 (Bottle) The SAQ just picked this beer up... as did I, but I wished I had not. Thin, white head and a golden body. Orange aroma with some alcohol. An unmasked flavour of 90% Grand Marnier / 10% beer - not a good thing. Orange extract finishing bitter. This is event worse than the cognac/beer mixes I've had. Save your money.

Really clear amber, head... what head? At first, Orange crush aroma, then comes the alcohol warmth and the orange gets a bit less agressive. Taste of diluted and carbonated Grand Marnier. As Voivod said, if you want to drink Grand Marnier go buy Grand Marnier. But if you want to drink beer, don't drink Madison.

Golden colour, clean appereance, almost no head. Strong orange and alcoholic aroma. The taste is dominated by the "Grand Marnier" flavour (orange, sugar, alcohol), very artificial, with just a bit of bitterness in the aftertaste (the only moment where this liquid seems like a real beer). Well, I like the Grand Marnier flavour, but if I want to drink something similar i buy the liqeur and not this artificially flavoured beer.
