3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 talon1117 (1152) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAY 9, 2011
The pour is a very hazy, effervescent, chestnut brown with a moderately full, beige, fizzy head but does settle to a nice, pillowy, frothy layer and leaves frothy, Belgian lace. The nose is rich with toasted caramel, light Belgian chocolate, date, slight raisin, and a big dose of clovey/spicy phenols. Flavor is similar with lots of rich malt; lots of toasted caramel and Belgian chocolate, date, earthy/herbal hops, light cinnamon, and a very slight orange ester note. The palate is nearly full, round, slightly warming, but lively. The beer finishes somewhat long, herbal, slightly orangey, peppery warm, but still chocolatey. Overall, an interesting dark Belgian with interesting hop flavors and esters from the yeast to meld with the phenols and rich malts. The complexity of the malt could have been better and the lively carbonation detracted from the otherwise great palate. Certainly not typical, which is good, but slight flaws keep this from being a great Christmas Belgian.

Sweet and slightly sugary toast-malty aroma with notes of Bavarian Blockmalz, a nutty touch and shades of alcohol. Sweet flavour, full bodied with a calm carbonation. Hearty and toasty malt-character with notes of nuts and caramel; sweet and slightly roasty bitter finish with vinous fruity notes and a warming, well-embedded alcoholic touch. 05.I.11

a cloudy copper looking brew that simply put is a very good take on an alcoholic gingerale, ale. gingerale taste and carbonation with a vegetable and fruit finish. a hop character of breathing in pineforest from overhead in cold weather. frothy and moderate in body. done well. the yeast invigorates well and the alcohol is warming with a soulfullness.

Fruity, with holiday spices. It is a cloudy brew that doesn’t pack a huge alcoholic punch but was a nice drinker on Christmas day.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 JCB (3862) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - MAR 8, 2011
750ml from Total Wine, Durham. It’s a failure of the imagination not to have this beer’s label be a photo from the giants parade. Bummer. Nice heavy pour, dusty amber and with a big sticky head. Nose of mellowed yeast and spice, kinda bread pudding-ish. Mouthfeel is moderately sticky, with a touch of heat as well. Nothing about the flavor really stands out when compared with Carolus, Chouffe, or other solid holiday entries. But overall, I found it to be a decent, faded, spicy BSA.
