COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Goliath Triple. Nice hazy golden color with white head, average carbonation, aromas of melon and cotton candy, oily texture, well crafted

0.33l bottle shared with and courtesy of yngwie, Meilby and the Tasting Crew. A soft blurry golden looking one with a small but white soft lacing head. The nose is quite oxidized, sweet caramel, some ripe fruitiness. Not to sweet though and hardly any alcohol detached. Quite lively on the bubbles, not aggressive but not to far off either - it feels only and slightly sticky in the mouth. It’s somewhat oxidized in the taste also. A nice sharp alco cut burns through the sweet caramel oxidation. Old ripe fruits, grapes and some sugar also. Not bad, but not to memorable either really. 16.06.2014

4oz on tap at Ei8ht Ball. Labeled on the menu as "Geants Goliath", but it’s listed as a 9% tripel and does not taste like a noel beer, so I’m entering my review here. Clear golden color. Minimal ring of white head. Some thin ropes of lace. Kind of a soapy, lemony aroma to it. Some toasty belgian yeast. Floral flavors (heather?) and honey. Ginger. Moderate to bigger sweet taste, mild zest, light bitterness, moderate spiciness. Mild tartness. Light bit of heat on the end. Medium to bigger body. Slick finish. Lighter, kind of crisp carbonation. OK, but I’m not crazy about this one. Weird aroma and flavor. Like a lemon-scented cleaning product, with a strange bite in the finish.

Bottle from de Bierschuur in Poppel. The beer has a yellow to golden color and nice large white head, with a nice carbonation. The aroma is very fruity, citrus like lemon. Also tones of grass, flowers and hops are well noticable. Even before drinking the aroma is a pleasure to smell. The taste starts fresh with the tones from the citrus. After that an explosion of a lot of tones like ginger, grass, pepper and a little sweetness from the honey makes this a well balanced beer. The finish is fresh and a little bitter and is noticable for a least a minute.

Draft at Churchkey, 7/12/14. Pours a hazy orange color with a medium sized fizzy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of nuts, candi sugar, floral and vegetal notes, glue. The taste is candi sugar, spice, candied fruit. Medium bodied, low carbonation, boozy.

Couleur clair, non filtré. Tête peu dense. Arôme malt, levure et banane. On retrouve la banane au palais ainsi que le malt et l'alcool. Belle réalisation, à vraiment ne pas boire trop fraîche. --- Bright color, unfiltered. Sparse head. Aroma malt, yeast and banana. There are bananas on the palate and malt and alcohol. Beautiful realization, really do not drink too fresh.

Alengrin (1716) - BELGIUM - AUG 19, 2014
Tripel version of Gouyasse, also tasted under its more conventional export name Goliath Triple. Off-white, sticky, irregular head, pretty stable in view of the alcohol strength. Colour a deep peach blonde, orangey, tending towards amber, cloudy. Strong fruity aroma of orange, apricot, grapefruit, cloves, coriander, white pepper, caramel and gin. Fresh fruitiness, caramel sweetishness, soft malty character with yeasty and spicy notes and a mild but sufficient hop bitterness in the finish, which is unfortunately abruptly disturbed by a strong, wry alcohol effect. Would have been a very decent tripel had the alcohol been hidden better.

Bottled, 33 cl. Unclear golden coloured one with swimming sediments in it and a big whipped creamy white head on its top, which remains finger thick. Liquorique nose with peach, bread and herbs. The aroma has liquor, some peach, mild honey, lemon, bread and herbs, mouthfeel is syrupy. Long sweetbitter, alcoholy finish escorted distinctly by herbs, citrusses and hints of resin. Serious brew.
