COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Hazy light yellow color, short lasting white head. Aroma of citrus, spices and yeast, some wheat. Sweet taste, bit sour of citrus, bit spicy and yeasty, nicely balanced. A more spicy triple.

Bottle via beer world. Pours a lovely glowing golden with a pillowing white head. When settled, the lacing is intricate and quite impressive to behold in its complexity. Malt forward front with yeast tanged balance. Yeast brings forth more spiciness than anything else. finish is long. (%??? You must be mad. Not cloying or overly sweet as many triples become. A nice brew.

33cl bottle. Filtered, golden with medium white head. Nose : fruity : peach , banana, a bit fragaria strawberry. Wet laundry yeast aromas. Caramel and a small hint of esters. Sip : Low to medium density with oily and creamy body. Sweet and ester acid sourness, some little bitter hops. Honey and herbal dryness. The ending is bitter hops with esters. Alcohol is well contained without being hidden. Overall it’s what I would categorize as a sweet and strong alcohol beer. Not my favorite kind though.

BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 10, 2012
33cl Brown bottle, best before 4-2013, drank and reviewed 8-2011. Poured into a Corsendonk badged stemmed tulip glass: looked good, clear deep golden amber body with a huge crown of snowy white bubbles for a head. Belgian yeasty aroma, with some sweet traces of candyfloss in there too. As the beer warmed in the glass a hop presence reared it’s head a little. The taste is semi-sweet initially, then a bitter harshness arrives as the mouth begins to dry. I prefer the first impression to the non-citrus but dry hop feel towards the end of each sip. Well carbonated, bubbles rising through the clear body throughout the tasting. The head leaving some good lacing too. Sadly, the alcohol also becomes conspicuous towards the end of each mouthful, which again, I’m not keen on.

Aroma is grains/bread and tropical fruit/sweetness. The flavor is yeast, bread, pineapple, an underlying sweetness and a warming alcohol presence in the finish. Apart from a slight harshness, it was pretty good.

Very spicy note on the nose and first sip. Drops off to a rich yeasty belgian tripel. Very nice beer when you can find it.
