Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

750 ml bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy golden orange color with a nice 1-2 finger fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings to the glass, with a nice amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of pear, apple, grape, light orange zest, bread, honey, herbal, floral, light pepper, and light yeast spiciness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good complexity and balance; a touch muted. Taste of big honey, apple, pear, grape, light caramel, light citrus zest, bread, floral, herbal, light pepper, and light yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of light fruits, honey, caramel, bread, herbal, floral, and light yeast spiciness on the finish for a bit. Nice flavor balance and complexity; with a very malt forward taste with low yeast spiciness; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a slick and lightly creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good Belgian Tripel. Very nice flavor complexity with solid balance; and very smooth to sip on for 9%. Even though I prefer more peppery Tripels, this was very enjoyable. This likely had some significant age on it though.

Clear golden slightly cloudy body. Huge lasting white head. Aroma of belgian yeast, corriander, bread, apricot and orange peel. Vierte un color dorado claro con pequeños trozos de levadura. La cerveza la constituye una brillante espuma gruesa que se conserva bien y gradualmente se desliza hacia abajo para dejar un montón de líneas en el vaso. Ligeramente a frutas como mora, pera, manzana verde y aromas de las uvas seguidos por toques de caramelo, ésteres y levadura. Maltas panosas y levadura belga culminan el olfato El gusto sigue al olfato con un montón de sabores de manzana y pera con levadura y lúpulo. El sabor a pan combina con una malta. Hay que menciona que se puede percibir una sensación picante. Un cuerpo medio con una carbonatación fuerte, el cuerpo es ligero y crujiente al paladar. La cerveza es embriagante y tiene un acabado seco. Una cerveza compleja con un acabado áspero pero una armonía entre el gusto, los sabores y la densidad. En general, es una triple tradicional que debe disfrutarse lentamente.

10/10/2015 sample @ Bles Bierhappening, Zottegem. Hazy yellow with nice head. Malty, some refreshing citrus, fruity, spices. Different than the typical tripels.

Foffern (1494) - Bodø, NORWAY - OCT 1, 2015
Bottle at home. 1 year old bottle. Pours a slightly hazy straw color and a creamy off-white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, citrus, hay and spices. The flavor is similar with more Belgian yeast, almonds and some alcohol. Has a soft mouth feel, full-bodied, and a light bitterness. A solid tripel with a well-balanced aroma and flavor.

Golden beer, opaque, with yeast flakes and a big creamy head. Smell is white pepper, coriander, quite dry with a subtle cherry sweetness. Bread, cereals. Taste is bitter with a hint of sweetness and a citric astringent finish. Peels. Good fizz and nicely refreshing.

Looks the fo-shizzle. Sunny, yellow gold with a slight mist and quickly settled yeast pad. Head goes up a good inch and holds for the length with a fine lace. Rocky and dense and snow-white in shade. Wonderfully plump and fruity nose with an underlying, sunny malt proflie. Very clean, with plenty of pale stonefruit, mango, papaya, navel orange and sherbet-like, candi notes. On the palate it is not shy on the booze with a heated, peppery spice to the swallow and warmth in the depths. Body is light and it is soft in feel to creamy in feel. Fruity, sweet and zesty front with a malty mid-palate then all yeasty esters in the back. Spice develops to envelope the esters. Beautifully balanced between sweet tip and dry tail with plenty in between. Wonderfully quaffable but also contemplative. Delicious. Beautifully done! Bottle from The Beerhive. Hazy golden body with small yeast chunks and a medium white head. Good lacing. Aroma of pear, papery malts, custard and spice. Flavour of pear, lemon sherbet and a peppery finish. Medium body with a spritzy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Uncomplex.

BOTTLE 33 CL as Goliath. Golden with a small sediment, huge white head. The aroma is strong and bright - white wine with notes of honey and flowers, as well some peppery and bready notes. The taste is similar but with a different balance - leff wine and fragrance, more spice, alcoholic bitterness and warmth. Very nice.

Bottle from the bar near manneken pis . Golden body. Resinous earthy, pinetc spring banana. Taste is sweet yeast and a tingly palate nice tripel .
