Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Hazy golden orange with one of the best heads Ive ever seen. Aroma is light and it is well balanced sweet and dry. One of my favorite tripels.

Golden, bit yeast game as I poured, big white frothy/creamy head, good lacing. Very malty aroma, lightly sweet, fruits and floral tones, belgian yeast notes, bit spicy, some herbs.. walking in nature here, honey. Fizzy, sweet, light bite, medium body but feels quite filling.. fuller than medium. Interesting one, lots of nuances, natural.

Bouteille 33 cl. Blonde à mousse blanche persistante. Nez très houblonné, herbes et épices. Bouche sèche et très amère où se retrouvent des épices (poivre), le malt et l’alcool. L’arrière-bouche est toujours amère et très longtemps. Bière atypique, je trouve ; pas vraiment "plaisante" mais intéressante.

UPDATED: SEP 26, 2016 La brasserie des légendes ou plutôt la brasserie des géants (cette dernière s’étant alliée à la brasserie Quintine en 2006) nous offre une bière d’une gande qualité au travers de cette Goliath Triple. La brasserie, crée il y a seulement 16 ans par un couple de jeunes diplômés, est dans la tendance de promotion du terroir belge. Seul une partie de houblon, spécifique, provient de Slovénie. Le malt provenant de leur ferme et le houblon de la région de Poperinge. Il est certain que cela n’est en aucun un gage de quaité gustative (et peut même représenter une limite certaine), mais lorsque cette philospohie aboutit à ce résultat, il faut le saluer. La robe de la Goliath Triple est jaune claire, marquée par une effervescences intense et avec une mousse crémeuse, blanche d’1 cm d’épaisseur. Le nez, très appréciable, est soyeux sur des notes lactées et des arômes floraux, de malt et de coriandre. Deux termes décrivent le mieux la dégustation : Harmonie et Fraîcheur. Harmonie entre le malt, la houblon, harmonie dans les arômes, harmonie dans les différentes attaques et leur progressivité. Fraîcheur des arômes et fraîcheur de la présence en bouche, (il faut saluer le parti pris de ne pas ajouter de sucre dans le brassin, permettant une légèreté, sans pour autant que l’on perçoive une présence trop marquée des l’alcool - 9 % Abv). L’attaque est douce, portée sur le malt et la pomme verte. La deuxième bouche laisse s’affirmer l’amertume, soyeuse, très fleurie, sur des arômes d’agrumes et de pin, très légèrement épicée. L’ensemble est très homogène, l’amertume, pas trop puissante s’alliant parfaitement au malt. Le final, plus sec, et davantage porté sur l’alcool, avec une petite pointe d’astringence, mais avec une présence de l’amertume très longue et agréable en bouche. Et si l’on pourrait regretter des arômes par trop classiques, la maîtrise et l’homogénéité de ceux-ci en font une très belle bière.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2016 Bottle@Chapitre. Pours hazy golden with white head. Aroma has light malt, somewhat sweet, spices and hops with citrus aromas. Taste is rather dry, spicy and hoppy at first with citrus, orange and pepper, leaving some maltyness and hops in the end. Moden tripel.

A very hazy, gold color with a large, white head and lots of yeasty floaters. Aroma of yeasts, spices, and some hops; it is a bit floral and fruity too. Taste is sweet, yeasty, spicy, pleasant, and simply put good. A medium to full body, a creamy texture, and a lively carbonation. Finish is long and sweet. Overall the beer is good: pleasant, unimposing, and quite drinkable.

AROMA: Lemon and orange peel, coriander, black pepper, slight tart character? 10/12

APPEARANCE: Amber hue; body is hazy with sediment floating in suspension. Huge, brilliant froth never dissipates with tremendous lacing. 3/3

FLAVOR: Sweet citrus flavor up front with spicy esters on the back. Soft, rounded grainy-sweet malt (no honey). Yeast esters create for Orange flavor without acidity Difficult to distinguish hop bitterness from natural spicy phenols. Alcohol is present, but complementary with faint vanilla character. Delicious palette. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium+ body, though gentle. Soft, rounded mouthfeel that feels a bit thick but is still carbonated enough to make it crisp (CO2 fades). Alcohol is tame and smooth; no warming sensation. Mostly dry aftertaste with minor lingering spice. 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Definitely one of the best examples of the style I can recall. I was worried this was an old bottle! 9/10

750 ml bottle. Unclear orange body with a huge, lacing white head. Aroma has pale malt, spices, some fruit and “sugary alcohol” (probably not a good term, esters might be better). Flavor is quite sweet pale malt, white sugar, mild fruit, yeast and alcohol. Low bitterness. Medium body and moderate, sweet aftertaste with some hot alcohol. Feels quite plain and sticky.
