COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hampshire has a huge toasted malt flavor balanced by assertive hoppiness. The finish is long and lingering with the malt and hop notes blending with alcohol warmth. Two row English malts (pale, crystal and chocolate); Cascade, Mt. Hood and East Kent Golding hops.

Amber color; beautiful creamy head. A good balanced Ale, with a good body strength, malty, quite good flavor, also milky (but puke comes out too), but its not as special as I remembered.

2003-03-02, Winter 1997-1998 Edition, 5 years old, 8-5-9-5-17=44.
Cloudy dark amber color with a persistent layer of foam; nice perlage. Wonderful aroma of malt, some hop, caramel, nuts, some phenols; pretty similar to some barley wine, but less sweet.
Excellent body texture, good balance of malty body and strong bitterness with good hop aromas, caramel, chocolate. Ending with a boldly bitter and aromatic final; a lot of caramel as well.
Maybe it has lost some hop freshness, but it has aged well, showing only a very light Madeira character.
An excellent low alcohol Barley Wine, without the alcohol punch.

This brew has a fine nose of anise, alcohol, spices, fruit (currants and plumbs), and almost a portish cask wood quality. Pours a sparkling medium ruby amber. The average sized off-white cramy head has fair lacing and is mostly lasting. The warm flavor though rich and deep is hard to define. The complexity flows so well that it is a challenge to pull single qualities from the whole. The finish is long and again rich. The medium lively palate is dry and finishes astringent.

UPDATED: JUL 24, 2003 2000 Millenium Vintage: Dark amber in colour with a medium off-white head. Nice flavours going, burnt sugars (both from caramel and from ripe fruit), a musty flavour as well. Good complexity and balance between the hops and malt, especially noticable in the aftertaste. A better vintage than the 2003 bottle which I had before. I had this one out of the same bottle with DougShoemaker given to us by Lyle Ostrow at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York. 7,4,7,4,16 2003 Vintage: Amber in colour with no head at all. Sweet and grapey in the smell. Strong--malty--and hoppy in taste. A great flavourful beer! 7,3,7,4,16

2001-2002 Bottle: Pours a clear, dark amber color with a small, off-white, rapidly dissipating head. Good strong malty aroma with touches of vanilla, butterscotch, and alcohol. Good carbonation and medium body, the flavor is malty sweet and somewhat nutty, with a long, sweet, butterscotch taste finish. Very nice.

Darker than amber with a thick lasting head. I enjoyed this 2001-2002 edition as 2002 turned into 2003. Sticky sweet nose with a strong molasses and alcohol notes. Super sweet at the start with a finish of alcohol and a medium amount of detectable hops. Only 7%, but the alcohol flavor is really noticable.

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2003 <HTML>This is my favorite Christmas beer so far this year (well maybe 2nd after Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale). Poured with barely any head, which was its only downfall. Otherwise, it had a delicious malty/caramel aroma and flavor which hid the alcohol well. I think this will be my New Years Eve drink of choice.</HTML>

For the most part this beer is right down the middle. Nothing to rave about but nothing to complain about either. Amber color with a thin head, aroma of nuts and hop, Flavor has a so-so malt start, nutty body and a decent hop finish. Overall, Good but not great.
