COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Beer #2 of 4 in a special release series celebrating Geary’s 20th Anniversary. Imperial IPA has its origins in the traditional English style, with a generous helping of American exuberance. Bright copper in color, Imperial IPA has an assertive hop bitterness balanced with a subtle malt foundation. Dry-hopping at two stages of the brewing process provides floral and fruity hop flavors adding to the complexity of the brew. Strong, assertive and balanced, Imperial IPA is made for true beer lovers.

Pours hazy amber with a nice white head. Smells of citrus, some resin. Tastes of sweet citrus, syruppy and astringent.

12oz bonus from Porterhouse. Pours orangey with a tan head. Nose is sweet with a touch of citrus. Taste is sweet and a bit too bitter up front. medicinal and eh.

Nice bright red color, clear. Sweet floral hop aroma, slightly metallic. Flavor doesn’t match the complexity of the aroma, more watery than I had hoped. Not very bitter for an Imperial IPA, but it works for the overall lightness of this brew.

12oz bottle courtesy of connecticutpoet poured into a tulip. Pours very dark for a DIPA, a deep clear amber with a big creamy white head that shows great retention and lacing. It’s a very appetizing looking brew. The aroma is that of a balanced DIPA. It’s got plenty of citrus hops including oranges and grapefruits but the caramel malt sweetness is also a major player in the nose. The taste is even sweeter than the aroma suggests with the sweet caramel malts really dominating the taste. There is some earthy hops that show throughout as well with a slight bitterness in the finish. In addition, there is a sweet vanilla type sweetness that shows up in the finish. The mouthfeel is very smooth and not nearly as bitter as I was expecting. There is good carbonation and it’s medium bodied. This is a nice, drinkable DIPA but the hop profile is probably not quite as significant as I would like, even for a balanced DIPA. Nonetheless, a nice English-style DIPA.

Ha! Got you finally! It’s now bottled, but dont fall for that, get this on tap, its significantly better that way! The aroma is a bunch of floral piney hops, centennials maybe. Flavor is nice and bitter with a fair malt back bone to give it the needed oomph. I’m glad they re-released this because it was the only Geary’s brew I had managed to not track down for some time. Get it when you see it, especially on tap!

Draft @ 3 Dollar Dewey’s in Portland - Poured a quite darkish amber in color with a medium whitish head. Aroma was a nicely balanced mix of bready yeast/malt with some nice citrus/pine hops. Palate is very nice. Flavor was surprisingly mild/undistinct... a bit disappointing.

(Draft @ Damariscotta River Grill) Coppery orange body with a nice biscuit head. Aroma is mostly fruity hops, a little bready. Good lacing. Fairly heavy, full mouthfeel. Taste is fairly bitter right on through from start to finish. Bitterness overlays pleasant fruity hop flavor. Seemed a little musty as well. No alcohol apparency. Not much depth of flavor but I liked it for its lack of sharp sweetness and lack of big alcohol presence like other big IPA’s I’ve had. Much like a regular IPA except feels heavier and of course the higher ABV kick.

(Draught) On tap at the Great Lost Bear in Portland, ME. Stopped by the brewery the previous day and reception had told me that this beer was the Wee Heavy but I can tell that she was hop-wrong. Mild carbonation with tiny little bubbles. Near headless with a red-copper body. Nose is only mildly hopped. Flavour has good orange-peel with the regular Hi-hopped West Coast lingering finish. Good.

Had this on tap at Brian Borus’ in Portland. I think they just get it in this week. Pours a bright yellow orange color with small creamy head. Aroma is pungent with floral hops, some grapefruit and other citusy stuff. Flavor is dominated by hops, and grapfruit and some spice, sweet. i think this is an Imp. IPA but the bartender just told me it was an IPA. thick and heavy mouth feel. Quality beer, i would have probably rated much high if i was a bigger fan of IIPAs
