COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our flagship pale is a classic British pale ale with a nod to the legendary beers of Burton-on-Trent. Copper-colored, dry, clean and crisp with lots of late hope taste in an appetizing complex with ale fruitiness from imported Hampshire yeast.
Ingredients: Two row English malt (pale, crystal and chocolate); Cascade, Mt Hood, Tettnang and Fuggle Hops.

12oz Bottle poured at the RIFT English Pale Ale tasting. The BJCP does give this as an example of ESB, but I was suspicious. It’s always seemed less like that and more like what this site calls the English Pale Ale to me. Aroma is malt, darker than the others we’ve had and with some toast. Flavors really hold onto this maltiness, but brighten up a bit with a good hop finish. Yeasty fruit esters throughout. It’s alright.

Another Maine locals suggestion. Had this, (along with Shipyard) with fried clam strips and lobster.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a copper color with a medium head. Some malty sweet and bready aroma. This continues into the flavor. Has a sharp bitter finish that is appropriate to the style. A decent beer.

one of the original east-coast pale ales that take from english-style pales and add just a little more hop aroma and a little less malty flavor. crisp, clean, and so enjoyable, a true east coast treasure that is the first step for a lot of people on their hop journey.

Tap at a Portland restaurant. Nice copper color with a thin white head. Aromas include english malt, caramel and a faint hop presence. Taste is quite sweet, a bit of a bitter finish with a potent lingering yeasty flavor, kind of off. Once again, an example of bland craft beer.

Bottled. Gold with thin head. Aroma is earth, caramel and fruit. Flavor is similar but too buttery diacetyl. Pretty boring, pretty ok.

Pours a golden brown color. Aroma is mainly full of malts and hops. Flavor is of malt, hops, and caramel. The ending leaves hoppy caramel finish.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from a mix 12 pack from Hannaford Grocery in Boothbay
It pours a deep ruddy amber color with a small, frothy white head. The nose is very light with notes of caramel and malt sweetness. The flavor is surprisingly light and missing any sort of bitterness really. The malt is the star here. Well, sort of. See, the problem is that it seems to be missing flavor in general. A bit of grain, a touch of caramel, a bit of a British sour note, a little back bitterness, but really not much of any one component. This is good in the sense that there is some balance but there just isn’t enough flavor, especially for a pale ale. Light to medium in body with average carbonation and a short, slightly malt finish. This beer suffers from being all too forgettable.
