COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask & bottled; Regular.
A complex blend of dark malts creates this classic, rich, strong stout.
No narrowboat is complete without a solid-fuel stove. Whether they burned the coal they were carrying or found bits of wood along the towpath, the stove provided an essential source of heat during the bitter winters on the waterways and something to cook on for a boatman and his family. Or, as we used to do, to heat the water for a day’s brewing!

An amazing Stout which disguises its strength perfectly, there is a warm and inviting aroma of chocolate and liquorice which is followed up in the taste, with added malt and biscuit which caress the tongue leaving an oily feel and a warming sensation down the throat. A great dark ale and well worth having a pint.

Cask at The Fighting Cock, Bradford, September 2013. Pours black with cream head, chocolate, wood, old chocolate liquor and delicate smoke aroma, smoky with sweet undertones in the mouth. Body’s a little too light, wooden and slightly smoky finish. Pretty good, outstanding aroma but the taste and body weaken it.

500ml bottle - deep black, body, fading white head. Smoky dusty nose, loads of dark chocolate and coffee. A roasted nut bite, with notes of bitter chocolate and cigar smoke. A very dusty palate to this, and a bit thin on the mouthfeel. A nice one as you go along and settle into the drink.

Standout Cask beer in an evening largely dominated by variations on blonde bitter. Pint at The Old Black Bull, Preston. True black with nice tan head. Good roasted aroma, hints of chocolate. Tastes - full of dark malt flavours, and really well-balanced smokiness. Finishes smooth and thick. Lovely.

Cask. Jet black with a mid tan thick head. Blackcurrant and charcoal nose, hint of corn. Very full in the mouth with blackcurrant, sultana, wood, charcoal, hint of lemon, sugar puffs and a little bit of licorice. Can see this getting a bit sickly as it goes, but it's pleasant to drink as a solo.

6 Some rich roast, not giving off any signs of smoke. Still pretty pleasant.
4 Dark, small head.
7+ Nice full malty body. RNs subdued compared to previous UK stouts. 4+ Smooth, soft carbonation. Finish has a great roast.
14 Very nice, but it’s too focused on just a single roasty taste, and not smokey! Could be made a lot more interesting.

Cask, Peterborough Fest 2012. Black with a beige bubbly head. Aromas are nutty with smoky coffee and creamy oak barrel. Liquorice with raisins and burnt toast. Flavours are smoky and earthy with burnt toast. Herbal with coffee and gritty cocoa. Dry to finish. Nice.

Cask conditioned at Fleetwood Beer Fest ’12. Black with tan head. Slightly smokey aroma, which leads into the flavour, bitter, hints of tannin, dry and quite bitter. Full on the palate, lasting with good depth. Very pleasant.
