After the winner in the Shutout Stout, the Big Ben Strong Bitter caught my eye next. The General Lafayette is celebrating American Brew Month (July 2000) with various offerings - this was the one available the night I was there. This is a excellent, dark golden red strong ale. It’s bitter only in name, not in flavor (like a UK Bitter) - it’s got a full malt body, with a good flavor of some of the sweeter malts. Subtle hopping adds a nice finish to this excellent beer. While I don’t frequent here as much as I used to, this and the Shutout Stout are by far the best beers I’ve had here - hopefully they’ll keep up the good work. Note that the Big Ben Bitter is quite different from their normal bitter they have on tap - which is very mild.

Med body, light brown cloudy color, large foamy head lingering head. Slightly fruity, good presence of English hops and bitterness. Quaffable.
