TAR (2236) - Lafayette, USA - MAY 9, 2005
Draft: Black with caramel hints. Dense but scattered wisp of foam. Fresh java nose with roasted malts and smoked chocolate scents. Spiky firmness to the carbonation. Oily body. Opens with a buttery coffee foundation with hints of ink and roasted grains. Dry-inducing blend of coffee grounds and alcohol accentuate notes of charred malt hulls. Suppressed black cherry fruitiness. Anticlimactic finish, teetering on the edge of char, with notes of roasted malt and bittersweet chocolate. Coarse char lingers alongside simplistic malt flavors. Very predictable.

Cthonic black color with a sasparilla underpinning. The nose is overwhelmed by roasted coffee grains. The body, however, is far too tannic and vegetal. Perhaps from hot coffee added to the wort or secondary, rather than cold-brewed. In any case, the upshot is an astringent and subpar coffee beer.

(Draught) Pours an opaque black body with a medium tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, light dirty socks, chocolate, and wet plywood. Flavor of coffee, roasted hatch chilies, caramel, and chocolate.

I’m not rating Gentle Ben’s Mocha Java Stout; I’m rating Barrio Mocha Java Stout (on tap at Barrio). Just want to make that clear. Anyways, the Mocha Java Stout was the real all-star from my night out with Carin. Barrio doesn’t pull any punches here: this is just a dark, roasty, sweet, coffee-flavored stout. Sure, it’s not very inventive, but this brew is just too tasty to get anything below a 4 rating.

On tap at Barrio Brewing. Pours black with a dark tan head. Aroma of roasted malt with underlying roasted coffee. Flavor is not in your face java, but the java is there, along with sweet and roasted malts. Good coffee beer! 7/4/8/4/14 (3.7/5)

6.8% on tap at barrio 4/5/10. dark brown near black with orange at the edges. tan head. it smells of coffee grounds, roast with slight ashiness, vanilla, caramel and chocolate. the flavor is the same... a little ash and tartness on the finish with coffee lingering in the aftertaste. medium bodied, crisp and terribly easy drinking. 7/4/7/4/15/3.7

Growler acquired in trade with cbkschubert as part of the Growler Swap v 1.0 (thanks Craig!). Poured a dark, dark brown color with an average to larger sized tan head. Aromas of chocolate, roast, some coffee and a little earthy. Tastes of chocolate, coffee (more in the taste vs. the aromas), ligher roast, and some caramel. Well done!

egajdzis (4587) - Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 21, 2008
Poured a dark brown color with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, and some coffee. Taste of chocolate, dry roasted malts, coffee, and a bit of vanilla, before finishing dry.

highibus (633) - Vail, Arizona, USA - FEB 1, 2008
On tap at Barrio. Pours a deep black with thin tan head. Dissapates quickly with slight lacing. Aroma slightly resembles coffee and more roasted malt. Not a ton of coffee flavor, I would like more. The roastiness comes through with a nice clean finish. Light to medium body for a stout. Good flavor but could have gone more bold. Nice brew.
