DATE TASTED: August 3, 2013 ... GLASSWARE: Samuel Adams Boston Lager... OCCASION: watching Money Ball--and loving it!... APPEARANCE: handsome black and tan split-level body; thin white head that staggers on its reddish-brown base--looks inviting... AROMA: fragrant caramel malts breath a bready blast; sugary suggestions as well... PALATE: medium-to-light bodied with a swift, soft aftertaste--a red in the pattern of the many during its mid-90s deluge that we came of drinking age to at college...TASTE: strongly malted base forms the brunt of this old-time Hess Tavern offering; rather flat, rounded ops that profile as an ESB, though not enough hops surface to make an ale; a bit buttery too--but more in the feel than in the taste; the after drag is slightly warm and rough... OVERALL: a lagered, emasculated ESB that fulfills its March Ides duty but cannot demand much more on a cool summer night such as this...recently I toasted the anniversary of my wife and I by romantically recalling this beer set next to mine (a Honey Brown) on a college bar basement table; out of context, Killians looks nice in that oddly-necked bottle, but now under Coorsí auspices, one can see what is and is not present in this beer...

Poured from 12 oz bottle into pint glass. Appearance: pours a thick off white head that falls moderately with some very light lacing. Head retention is good throughout the drink. Color is clear reddish-amber with moderate streaming carbonation. Aroma: malt is quite dominate with whole wheat bread and caramel. There is an earthy hop presence in the background. Mouthfeel: fairly light and frothy with a quick somewhat dry finish. Flavor: caramel and a strong bread presence with a mild earthy hops in the finish. Overall: a decent and drinkable brew.

Not a bad beer, not bitter at all. And not as light as one of the lite beers with a watery taste.

An amber colored lager that has a pretty good looking color to it and a nice aroma. Comes off clean and crisp after a sip which is to be exoected for a light bodied beer.

Probably my favorite beer to drink at a bar that has zero craft. Itís usually available and it does the trick. Clean with some nice malty flavors, nothing much to write home about, however.

Canít believe Iíve never rated this. Everyone knows what it looks like and what it tastes like, so I wonít waste my time. The biggest thing with this beer is the difference between the draft and bottle. Much prefer the draft.
