DATE TASTED: August 3, 2013 ... GLASSWARE: Samuel Adams Boston Lager... OCCASION: watching Money Ball--and loving it!... APPEARANCE: handsome black and tan split-level body; thin white head that staggers on its reddish-brown base--looks inviting... AROMA: fragrant caramel malts breath a bready blast; sugary suggestions as well... PALATE: medium-to-light bodied with a swift, soft aftertaste--a red in the pattern of the many during its mid-90s deluge that we came of drinking age to at college...TASTE: strongly malted base forms the brunt of this old-time Hess Tavern offering; rather flat, rounded ops that profile as an ESB, though not enough hops surface to make an ale; a bit buttery too--but more in the feel than in the taste; the after drag is slightly warm and rough... OVERALL: a lagered, emasculated ESB that fulfills its March Ides duty but cannot demand much more on a cool summer night such as this...recently I toasted the anniversary of my wife and I by romantically recalling this beer set next to mine (a Honey Brown) on a college bar basement table; out of context, Killians looks nice in that oddly-necked bottle, but now under Coorsí auspices, one can see what is and is not present in this beer...

Amber to red super clear. Malty sweet like an Amber bock. Lager like but malts are lean and quickly dissipating. More metallic stuff going on. Off flavors not to my liking.

Some color some malts no hops very watery, slight metal finish. Inexpensive which is only real good thing here.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 8/31/2015. Pours crystal clear reddish copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of caramel, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready/roast malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal/spicy/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Moderate dryness after the finish for roasted bitterness. Good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/roast malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Fairly clean on lager flavors with minimal yeast ester notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly bready/chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a very solid Irish Red styled lager. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/bready/roast malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A pleasantly enjoyable offering.

Pours a reddish copper color. About two finger beige color head. It doesnít last long, not much lacing.

Aroma is coffee and toffee. Medium roasted barley malt. I bet if you did a blind taste test, youíd be surprised. The aroma would stand up to anything in the style.

Taste follows the nose. Coffee and toffee. Barley malts. Itís pretty sweet, but a touch of bitter at the end. Very nice.

Mouthfeel is very very smooth. Likewise very very drinkable. Body is medium.

Overall, this is very tasty. Itís a lot better than I remember. I donít think youíll be disappointed.

This isa beer I loved in college. The guys and I loved this stuff back then. We thought we were something drinking this. Everyone else was drinking Bud Light, we were drinking these, oooh yeah! Let the good times roll!

draught. Dark amber colour, slightly off-white head. All malts, sweet and caramel/bready. Brewed by Coors? Wow, actually not half bad.
