On tap, Virginia Inn, Belltown, Seattle
Bright dark chestnut brown colour. Nutty aroma with nuances of milk chocolate and tobacco. Smooth palate of hazelnuts and light chocolate notes - that nut tastes artificial though they don’t even use any hazelnut at all. Strange. A bit of raw vanilla astringency comes in late. That raw, harsh finish really cuts what begins life as a very sweet brew and impedes the drinkability of the brew. I would suggest cutting back the alcohol as this seems to be the source of the problem.

A pretty solid brown ale for a generally mediocre style. Pleasently hoppy and drinkable but nothing spectacular.

Deep, thick brown with decent head. Brown malt aroma. Medium bodied, with again a brown malt accented flavor with hints of nuttiness and some bitterness. Ok.

On tap at Porterhouse, West Seattle. I really wanted to like this beer for three reasons...it is from Georgetown Brewing, a local place. All the proceeds go to a really great and noble cause...and it has a really warm and fuzzy tribute story. Unfortunately it falls way short as a brown ale. This sample was definitely too sweet for consideration as any of the brown ale categories, and I mean sweet as in both underattenuated and a little too much sharp caramel sweetness for a brown ale. Even if this was to be considered a Southern Brown Ale (which it is not) it would still be too sweet. The sweetness is very overpowering and makes the beer cloying. They state that it should be balanced by loads of hops, but in this particular example I would beg to differ. The trademark sharp roast of roasted barley is non-existant and the centennial hops cannot be differentiated in the flavor profile. Yes it is a nice story, yes Georgetown brewing generally makes very good beer, yes it only comes out once a year....but no, they seem to have missed the mark entirely.

Pint - Eastside Club Tavern - Olympia, WA
Aroma – Nice dark malt aroma, the chocolate and nut aromas very subtle and good.
Appearance – Brown in color, clear, very nice head.
Flavor – A very nice brown ale with good malt and hops use. The nut and chocolate come through very nicely.
Palate – Nice Mouthfeel, great texture with a dry finish.
Overall – I really liked this beer. Had some complex flavors that came out nicely. Liked that the nut and chocolate are flavors coming out of the roasted malts. This shows some good brewing is happening. This beer has gotten better over the years.
