Gerstel Bräu was, when launched in 1977, Germany's first non-alcoholic beer. This long experience in brewing non-alcoholic beer for the discerning drinker can be tasted at every sip.

Bottle. Pours a clear and light amber beer with a white head. The aroma is weak with malt, hay and sweetness. The flavor follows the nose. The palate is dry. Overall a bad beer.

Moderately skunked cereal grain aroma. Clear golden, headless. Cardboard and cheerios flavor, equal proportions, and fairly intense. I would normally tank the rating for such a beer and normally don’t rate to style, but considering it is a NA, it isn’t all that bad. The intensity is a welcome change for flavorless near beers. Alas, the flavor isn’t great. I’d rather have Clausthaler Amber.

bottle. Clear golden colour, mid-sized white head. Hoppy nose. Sweet and malty with a shy hoppy touch. Rather nice for an alcohol free beer.

12 ounce bottle from Trader Joe’s in Glen Allen, VA. Pours a clear golden amber color with a thin frothy white head. The aroma is very malty with husky grainy notes, almost like straight malt. Taste is bitter minty hop notes that give way to caramel and sweet malty notes. Medium bodied. A little bit too sweet, but one of the better NAs out there.

Can, from Doha, Qatar
Blond color. It has a very poor aroma and flavor: wet bread, wet cereals, corn; low carbonation; and as if it was not enough, the bitterness is absent.
I finished it because I didn’t drink anything for hours and I needed liquid.

33cl bottle from Vincenzo’s in that part of KW that isn’t really Kitchener but isn’t really Waterloo either in the Belmont Village. Claims to have expired last month, though it looks fine. Novelty purchase. Pours a nice gold, dead with a tiny white head. Aroma is insanely sweet, grainy, almost like unfermented lager wort (oh wait maybe that’s what it is). Really pungent aroma, can’t quite get over it, smells almost like malta goya. Flavour is surprisingly tame, very dull and watery. Same sweet worty aspects with a semi dry touch in the finish that I can assume is probably from coming into contact with hops at some point, if only briefly. It’s actually tolerable for what it is, not sure I’d like to drink large amounts of it, ever, either all at once or over time. Interesting to try I guess. Doesn’t really compare to the Mecca of N/A’s, Labatt Nordic, which is sometimes refered to simply as ’Man’s Greatest Achievment Ever’.

Bottle 33cl. [ As Gerstel Alkoholfrei ].
Clear light to medium yellow orange color with a small to average, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, white head. Aroma is moderate malty, bread, grain, paper. Flavor is moderate sweet with a average duration. Body is medium to light, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. [20090405]

Bottle, 0.5% as Gerstel Alkoholfrei. Bready and teaish aroma. Clear golden colour. Very small white head. Quite bready flavour, some hop tea. Unpleasant bitterness. A little sweet.

Bottle from Starsky in Mississauga. OK I do have standards even in alcohol free. This is a clear fail. Taste stewed grain and metallic, a bit sulfur, fake-sweet body and wet dog. The aroma is tight, processed and fake like the tastes. Palate and aftertaste is probably the worst feature. I used half the bottle shampooing my hair, and my hair did not thank me.
