Gerstel Bräu was, when launched in 1977, Germany's first non-alcoholic beer. This long experience in brewing non-alcoholic beer for the discerning drinker can be tasted at every sip.

Bottle from some Polish deli. Beautiful appearance - bright golden-yellow with a good sized white head. Mild aroma of stale malt and grassy hops. Sticky body. Thin but not unpleasant flavour, fairly sweet with mild hops in the finish. Not great, but no worse than many European lagers I’ve tried, and certainly one of the best NA beers I’ve had.

Well whoopty-freakin’-doo!

Perhaps my rating is over-duly influenced by the excellent trippel that I had before imbibing this offering... or could it just be that this beer stinks?
And it does. There’s some biscuity malts in the aroma, but they come across as old, stale, and unwanted. Cloyingly sweet. That carries into the taste - grainy and souringly sweet. I waited for some hop bitterness, but was rewarded with zinc metallica. This is still burning my tongue. I need some mouthwash.

Canned(500ml). -quite ordinary N.A. malty, grainy and slight corny aroma with herbal notes, low carbonation, not so pleasant bitter aftertaste

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2006 For a NA this is pretty impressive, not much in terms of aroma, but suprisingly thick for a NA, with a havy malty tasle, with hints of hazelneut in the taste, not overly carbonated or skunky like many other NAs, would highly recomend

Very light color pour with short lived white fluffy head. Leaves nice lacing. Grainy aroma one encounters when brewing with grain. Not much in the way of hops. Typical bitter aftertaste one expects with a Non Alcoholic.

Beer no. 19 of my Slovenian beerhunt.
Poured a big thick and fluffy white head that went away at a medium pace leaving tons of lacing. Pale golden colour. Strong sickly sweet n/a smell (aka. sharp soggy cornflakes smell).. nasty. However, the taste isn’t that bad for a n/a. That malt doesn’t dominate the body (which, while empty for a beer, is full enough for a n/a), and it only leaves some weak honeyish taste, some ok hops, lemon and a lingering acidic-bitter aftertaste. I’ve had worse. Far worse. And hey, this was 72 SIT for a 0.5l can which is exactly 30 Euro cents, making it the cheapest n/a I’ve ever had.

(Bottle 33 cl) Pretty golden beer with a decent head. Soft and slightly sweet, but no metallic tang as so often in this style. Very malty (even some wheat) with a nice little touch of hops in the finish. Quite pleasant low alcohol. 220701

I really don’t mind fake beer, but this one was quite poor. Heavy cereal flavor without any hop character at all. They could make the malt more interesting, or throw in some hops to hide how bad it is, at least.

UPDATED: JUL 13, 2007 Weak aroma. Dominant corn taste, tastes almost roasted. Slight bite to it. Little complexity to the malt. Decent hops taste. There are far better non-alcoholic brews, but this one is also fairly cheap, although it is not as easy to find. A decent value for the money. Tastes more like an arab NA beer than a european NA.

UPDATED: AUG 22, 2005 a bright golden colour with a fine head and a nice lacing: this is for the good news ... I’m always anxious to smell a NA beer and this one confirms my fears: a strong aroma of wort hurts my nose very badly; the malt body is inexistant and the finish is beyond all descriptions ... I cannot believe someone can drink this (not telling about giving it a 2.9 !) - I think it’s time to extend the rating table to be able to give some 0
