Brewers in the midlands of England would boil their barley wines ales for longer times to intensify their flavors. In making Massive! we used only British Halcyon pale malt and boiled for eight hours, giving the beer a deep ruby color and rich malt flavor. Heavily hopped, Massive! is a beer that can be enjoyed now for its intensity, or after years and years and years of aging.

Bottle. Sensoric. Deep ruby with tiny, light brown head. Poor lacing and head retention. NIce, medium aroma of dried red fruits, peaches. Medium malty aroma - toffee, caramel. Taste is sweet, but not overpowering in the end little mild. Notes of brown sugar, brandy. Medium to full body, sticky texture, soft carbonation, finish is semi-sweet and quite short. Little alcohol warming. In general typical english-like barley wine, enpowered by lots of malts, but what’s most important not so sweet, that you can’t drink whole the bottle.

Heavy aroma of red fruits, yoghurt, applebutter, vanilla with peaches and caramel. Interesting dark red colour with a noce off white head. Wow! Very sweet, but not just sweet ??. Caramel, cane sugar, caramel, cane sugar and some spicy alcoholiness. Rasins, caramel, orange, yeast and a far away hoppy dryness. Strange, nice but a bit too massive for me!

Beautiful ruby red beer, crystal clear with nice bubbliness and a white head. Smell is overwhelming caramel, with yoghurt and dark fruit. Apple butter, hint of vanilla. Taste is too sweet. Like forest fruit jam. Light bitterness, touch of citrus. Subtle alcoholic twang. Finish is long, astringent, complex with lots of herbs.

650 ml bottle. Pours a clear dark mahogany with almost no head. Aromas of brandy, dark candied fruit, sweet malts and toffee. Flavors are same, sweet and sticky with a hot finish. Great stuff. Would be great to cellar to see what happens.

And massive it is. Huge full bodied sweet beer. Some bitterness, hop aroma faded. Beer is old but good. Some oxidation notes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a clear amber with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out notes of brown sugar, caramel and dried dark fruits. Flavour is massive indeed, with loads of brown sugar upfront, followed by caramel, toffee and dried dark fruits. It’s borderline cloying, but is so well-constructed that I can overlook it. Wonderful barley wine.
