Brewers in the midlands of England would boil their barley wines ales for longer times to intensify their flavors. In making Massive! we used only British Halcyon pale malt and boiled for eight hours, giving the beer a deep ruby color and rich malt flavor. Heavily hopped, Massive! is a beer that can be enjoyed now for its intensity, or after years and years and years of aging.

Bomber. Pours a deep amber coppery color, medium white head with little retention. Nose is kind of musty, piney hops, some brown sugar, orange peel, vanilla. Mouth is syrupy sweet (which luckily Iím in the mood for) sticky on the palate, dates, raisins, figs, vanilla, candy sugar, light bitterness in finish along with a faint old-school Lifesaver flavor íButter Rumí taste. Pretty good stuff. Chicago (thankfully) isnít seeing the blizzard theyíre getting in the Northeast, but the sleet/snow thatís forming an icy crust over there on Archer Avenue justifies this seasonably suitable beverage.

Pours a brown ruby red with off-white foam. Smells strongly of grapefruit with hints of cranberry and deeply sweet lupulin. Tastes very sweet and fruity to start with, then fades to a crisp deep barley then ends warm with growing bitterness and lingering sweetness.

"Well, they got the name right. Deep, and BIG, in every sense of the word. This is pretty much what I am looking for when Iím in the mood for a barleywine. Rich toffee, fruity sweet, but with more than enough hops to notice. The body is great for a beer of this strength. Dangerously drinkable and very very tasty. If the abv didnít show itself more as the beer warmed, Iíd have scored this even higher."

Isnít "Gigantic Massive!" a bit redundant? Like "Big Large"? At any rate it lives up to its name, with a huge, creamy malt base and smooth malts. My Notes actually use the word "smooth" like, I donít know 4 times. I was glad I had some friends to share this with because I had a long day of drinking a head of me.

Bottle:   Darker caramel, reddish hued, thin frothy tannish head, dissipates quickly, little lacing.   Soft caramel, toffee, biscuit, citrus peel, and hops on the nose.   Pale caramel and candied citrus peel up front on the tongue, not all that hoppy.   Seems to have a bunch of tea leaves too.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Not too heavy or sickly sweet, thankfully.   Lingering citrus peel, pith, and tea leaves, with only a touch of caramel or toffee.   Not as big as I would have liked, needs more caramel/malt body.   Otherwise decent, hides the 12% well, tiz a bit warming, but isnít too hot.   Yeah, needs more malt body to make this bigger.

Bomber from Belmont Station. Pours dark ruddy copper with a slight beige head. Aroma is mixed hop over a rather strongly roasted malt. Nearly full bodied. Flavor seems to start chocolate, switches to mixed hop - citrus/pine - shows heavy malt - lights a mild burning in the throat. Itís sweet, towards brown sugar, but thereís so much hop that doesnít really matter. This is not quite accurate, but it finishes bittersweet. Couldnít resist.
