3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22. Pours a murky dark amber with a dense and creamy tan head that sticks around for a while. Loose creamy lace. Big sweet toffeeish nose, lots of treacle and some vanilla and deep caramel. Very, very much a traditional english barleywine. Creamy thick body, not quite sticky, very little carb. Caramel, toffee, treacle, maybe a tiny bit of gingerbread and definitely a little butter cookie. Very nice mid palate and must be suitable for at least some aging. Long sticky sweet finish. Nice effort.

Graveyard mix aroma hard to explain but comes across very sweet. Very clean and clear appearance. Still a slow sipping barley wine but the 12% abv not that present.

gigantic on tap - nose of cherry , syrup, booze. Nice amber color with light head tends to cling to side of glass. Taste of boozy cherries and grapes with sweet malt aftertaste.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle... Poured dark reddish with a nice forming beige-ish head. Had a thick mouthfeel with lots of malt sweetness and alcohol heat. Some hoppy bitterness too. This corssed that line between American Barleywine and American Strong Ale (think Double Bastard I guess). Some dark fruits and yeast Estes but overall this was a malty bitter beast.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Tap at Gigantic, PDX, 22/05/13.
Clear chestnut brown with a thin beige head.
Nose is dark fruits, booze, sugars, dates, raisens, malt.
The taste is a little harsh booze wise, sugars, dark toffee, dates, brown sugars.
Full bodied, fine carbonation, boozey in the finish.
Overall I didn’t really enjoy this BW, lacked balance, booze a little on the harsh side. Average at best, drinkable just about, but only in small doses and not one I’d consider revisiting. When I contrast this to Pelicans - Mother Of All Storms which I had a few days later it really is a case of Nissan vs Rolls Royce!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Brewery. Pours a brown ruby red with off-white foam. Smells strongly of grapefruit with hints of cranberry and deeply sweet lupulin. Tastes very sweet and fruity to start with, then fades to a crisp deep barley then ends warm with growing bitterness and lingering sweetness.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap at Gigantic. Colour...somewhat cloudy garnet amber with an off white head. Nose...massively (pardon the pun) hoppy with a resinous character and bits of sugar sirop to boot. Palate...viscous, coating and chewy with more hops and a hop candy flavour to meld with the massive malt! This barley wine hides its abv very well and doesn’t seem even remotely 12%! There’s plenty of caramel to go with the hops and toffee on the finish. Nicely done!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAR 1, 2014 On draught at Gigantic’s First Anniversary 5/9/13. Deep dark amber. Resinous, strong oily pitted fruit aroma. Sweet papaya and honeyed hop bitterness. Not as harsh as some barleywines. Hides alcohol content quite well. On draught again at Lucky Labrador for the 17th Annual Barleywine and Big Beer Festival 3/1/14. Now has a pleasing oxidized note to the flavor and a hint more bitterness.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2013 On tap at Gigantic for their anniversary.
A: Ruby/brown - kind of like red clay. Very little head, and the legs are barely there. It still looks pleasant sitting in the glass.
N: Dried pineapple, mango, hints of onion, plenty of toffee and caramel. The more I think about it, the more I like what they did here. It’s definitely on the sweeter side.
T: Very fruity. Pineapple, mango, and some mint. There’s a nice balance to this - it’s mostly sweet but the hop’s arrive to stop the beer from becoming cloying.
M: Heavy mouthfeel without being overly dense. 12% ABV is really well hidden - almost dangerously so.
O: Makes me think of a Bigfoot without the intense bitterness. Good stuff that should definitely age well.
