Brewers in the midlands of England would boil their barley wines ales for longer times to intensify their flavors. In making Massive! we used only British Halcyon pale malt and boiled for eight hours, giving the beer a deep ruby color and rich malt flavor. Heavily hopped, Massive! is a beer that can be enjoyed now for its intensity, or after years and years and years of aging.

Isnít "Gigantic Massive!" a bit redundant? Like "Big Large"? At any rate it lives up to its name, with a huge, creamy malt base and smooth malts. My Notes actually use the word "smooth" like, I donít know 4 times. I was glad I had some friends to share this with because I had a long day of drinking a head of me.

Bottle:   Darker caramel, reddish hued, thin frothy tannish head, dissipates quickly, little lacing.   Soft caramel, toffee, biscuit, citrus peel, and hops on the nose.   Pale caramel and candied citrus peel up front on the tongue, not all that hoppy.   Seems to have a bunch of tea leaves too.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Not too heavy or sickly sweet, thankfully.   Lingering citrus peel, pith, and tea leaves, with only a touch of caramel or toffee.   Not as big as I would have liked, needs more caramel/malt body.   Otherwise decent, hides the 12% well, tiz a bit warming, but isnít too hot.   Yeah, needs more malt body to make this bigger.

Clear amber color with ivory head. Big spicy pit fruit, toasted caramel aromas with mild florals and alcohol. Rich smooth mouthfeel. Big spicy toasted caramel, yeasty flavors with sweet pit fruits--warming lightly boozy finish----good

Bomber from Belmont Station. Pours dark ruddy copper with a slight beige head. Aroma is mixed hop over a rather strongly roasted malt. Nearly full bodied. Flavor seems to start chocolate, switches to mixed hop - citrus/pine - shows heavy malt - lights a mild burning in the throat. Itís sweet, towards brown sugar, but thereís so much hop that doesnít really matter. This is not quite accurate, but it finishes bittersweet. Couldnít resist.

Bomber from trade with michaelinwa. Pours a hazy reddish-orange color with a small foamy head that fades normally to a ring. Sweet, boozy aroma of cherries, toffee, caramel, pineapple, and honey. Taste is moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Nice complex mix of flavors. Cherry syrup, caramel, pineapple, grapefruit, honey, brown sugar, and dates. Somewhat boozy finish and still pretty smooth for 12%. I slammed the glass wayyyyy faster than I should have. Medium to thick body, chewy and syrupy mouthfeel. Pretty nice barleywine, would probably handle aging very well.

22. Pours a murky dark amber with a dense and creamy tan head that sticks around for a while. Loose creamy lace. Big sweet toffeeish nose, lots of treacle and some vanilla and deep caramel. Very, very much a traditional english barleywine. Creamy thick body, not quite sticky, very little carb. Caramel, toffee, treacle, maybe a tiny bit of gingerbread and definitely a little butter cookie. Very nice mid palate and must be suitable for at least some aging. Long sticky sweet finish. Nice effort.

Graveyard mix aroma hard to explain but comes across very sweet. Very clean and clear appearance. Still a slow sipping barley wine but the 12% abv not that present.

Bottle... Poured dark reddish with a nice forming beige-ish head. Had a thick mouthfeel with lots of malt sweetness and alcohol heat. Some hoppy bitterness too. This corssed that line between American Barleywine and American Strong Ale (think Double Bastard I guess). Some dark fruits and yeast Estes but overall this was a malty bitter beast.

Tap at Gigantic, PDX, 22/05/13. Clear chestnut brown with a thin beige head. Nose is dark fruits, booze, sugars, dates, raisens, malt. The taste is a little harsh booze wise, sugars, dark toffee, dates, brown sugars. Full bodied, fine carbonation, boozey in the finish. Overall I didnít really enjoy this BW, lacked balance, booze a little on the harsh side. Average at best, drinkable just about, but only in small doses and not one Iíd consider revisiting. When I contrast this to Pelicans - Mother Of All Storms which I had a few days later it really is a case of Nissan vs Rolls Royce!
