Brewers in the midlands of England would boil their barley wines ales for longer times to intensify their flavors. In making Massive! we used only British Halcyon pale malt and boiled for eight hours, giving the beer a deep ruby color and rich malt flavor. Heavily hopped, Massive! is a beer that can be enjoyed now for its intensity, or after years and years and years of aging.

Bomber from Belmont Station. Pours dark ruddy copper with a slight beige head. Aroma is mixed hop over a rather strongly roasted malt. Nearly full bodied. Flavor seems to start chocolate, switches to mixed hop - citrus/pine - shows heavy malt - lights a mild burning in the throat. Itís sweet, towards brown sugar, but thereís so much hop that doesnít really matter. This is not quite accurate, but it finishes bittersweet. Couldnít resist.

Tap at Gigantic, PDX, 22/05/13. Clear chestnut brown with a thin beige head. Nose is dark fruits, booze, sugars, dates, raisens, malt. The taste is a little harsh booze wise, sugars, dark toffee, dates, brown sugars. Full bodied, fine carbonation, boozey in the finish. Overall I didnít really enjoy this BW, lacked balance, booze a little on the harsh side. Average at best, drinkable just about, but only in small doses and not one Iíd consider revisiting. When I contrast this to Pelicans - Mother Of All Storms which I had a few days later it really is a case of Nissan vs Rolls Royce!

On tap at Mikkeller The Original. Hazy chestnut with a small off-white head. Malty aroma with dried fruit, especially raisin and cherry. Sweet malty flavour with plenty of caramel and brown sugar. Next to the bourbon version this is quite unimpressive (and also too sweet)

Pours dark red color with a small head. Plums on the nose, caramel and some fruits. Hops and resin on the flavor, caramel malts and ripe fruit notes. Nice and smooth.

Bomber. Pours a mostly clear but very dark reddish hue with a small white head. Looks awesome. A big sweet nose, toffee, caramel, rum, sugars. The flavor is massive indeed: sugary sweet concoction, certainly reminds me of some of the bigger sweeter English BWs like Thomas Hardy or J.W. Lee. caramel, raisin, toffee, brown sugar. Sweet fruity hops. Drinkable for sure. In my view, it needs some time to chill. Would be nice to try a 3 year old version.

Draught @ Mikkeller Bar. Aroma has sweey licorice and ripe fruits. Also some liquor. Flavour is sweet with ripe fruits, mild woody notes, sweet malt and liquor tones. Also raisins and molasses. Very sweet, very American. Feels quite like an ASA.

"Well, they got the name right. Deep, and BIG, in every sense of the word. This is pretty much what I am looking for when Iím in the mood for a barleywine. Rich toffee, fruity sweet, but with more than enough hops to notice. The body is great for a beer of this strength. Dangerously drinkable and very very tasty. If the abv didnít show itself more as the beer warmed, Iíd have scored this even higher."

22. Pours a murky dark amber with a dense and creamy tan head that sticks around for a while. Loose creamy lace. Big sweet toffeeish nose, lots of treacle and some vanilla and deep caramel. Very, very much a traditional english barleywine. Creamy thick body, not quite sticky, very little carb. Caramel, toffee, treacle, maybe a tiny bit of gingerbread and definitely a little butter cookie. Very nice mid palate and must be suitable for at least some aging. Long sticky sweet finish. Nice effort.
