3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 cmonster (897) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUL 15, 2012
First tried this at Cheers to Belgian Beers 2012 in Portland, and was my favorite of the show. Bottle served in a tulip. Dark brown with a short dark tan head. Decent retention and lacing. Earth, barnyard, dark chocolate, and saison yeast on the nose. Also some dark fruit notes. Medium sweet malty flavor. Medium body, light-fizzy carbonation, full-creamy texture, and a sticky, roasty finish. One of the best black saisons out there.

22. Pours nearly black with an unwieldily huge loose and sudsy tan head. Lots of lace. Bright soft nose of floral and black licorice notes mixed with roasty malt. Lively medium body, tons of brightly effervescent carb. Roasty, floral, and sweet notes work together on the mid palate. Mild finish.

Smells like a sour brown from the neck. Pours very dark brown with a decent head if you work at it. Interesting flavor. Definitely some saison notes, malt backbone, and a bit of smoke on the end. Mouthfeel is fairly thick for a saison. Oxidation that helps the overall flavor, well carbonated. Very nice tasting and I have to say, I am glad after the initial hype about this brewery. Very much like a black IPA but without the bitter hops. Very well put together beer. I like it a lot! Tasted at 55.7F.
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Syzzer (449) - Oregon, USA - JUL 8, 2012
This is a very unique beer. "Black Saison" says quite a bit. At 26 ibu, there is a smooth interesting malty bready body. Solid tan head.

On tap at Gigantic with Carla. Pours deep brown/black with creamy foam. Smells warm of cedar wood and belgian yeast, or something similar. Tastes lightly sweet of coffee, smoked charcoal, Belgian yeast and something akin to grapes.
