3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: APR 12, 2009 300ml bottle labeled as "Ginga Kogen Beer". Pours a hazy, light golden straw color. A small, fizzy, white head fades quickly, leaving wet lace that mostly rejoins the glass. The nose is pretty standard for a hefe, notes of lighty sweet, fresh wheat grain accompanied by banana, clove, and hints of lemony esters. Floral hops lend a perfumy scent. Flavors are fresh and crisp, with mild banana and clove again showing atop clean grain, with a light citrus blossom hopping. Relatively light bodied, crisp, and refreshing. Nice enough for the style. Well made.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from case and keg. pours a cloudy yellow/gold color with a big bright white head. Aroma is yeasty as hell, malty and full of coriander, orange and some banana bubblegum. Flavor is smooth and nice with cloves, bananas, gum, yeast, orange, malt and a spicy hint of pepper. This is surprising considering it comes from Japan. Pretty damn nice and underrated.

I first tried Ginga Kogen Ko Mugi Beer at Ippudo in Manhattan. This is a clear yellow ale with sediment once fully poured and a beautiful head. The aroma is sweet with light malts and a bit of alcohol. The flavor is full of sweet malts with a clean finish. This reminds me of a very clean Belgiam Triple. The best Asian beer I have tasted.

I believe this is the Wit beer they make, not a hefe. I got the silver star bottle. a decent Wit with a quite full body but a slightly off putting taste. Wouldn’t turn it down, wouldn’t seek it out

Bottle just says "Ginga Kogen Beer," but after much investigation (and smelling of said beer) I have decided it is this one. Pour is unfiltered, with a small head, and a few drops of yeast sludge from the bottom of the bottle. Unquestionably a wheat beer in aroma, but a very basic, mild one, just some banana, lemon, flour, a touch of black pepper. Flavor is a touch sweet, mild, with great carbonation and body, easy drinking but a little thin. Nothing too exciting here but still a fairly solid effort, would be good for Blue Moon drinkers as a small step up.

UPDATED: APR 11, 2010 Not sure if I have the right beer, but it tastes like a German hefeweizen, so best guess. Blue bottle, blue and white label says Premium Unfiltered Beer. Aroma of yeast. Cloudy straw. Full bodied, grapefruit and bubblegum. Nice enough.

Bottle, labeled "Silver Bottle". Relatively yellow, light and glowing, very cloudy with a medium head. Medium rich aroma of cloves, bananas, wheat malt. Not particularly sweet, with a good dose or sour/citrus. Light, tangy flavor with lots of bananas, cloves, citrus. Refreshing, light in body, somewhat spritzy. A lighter style weizen, on the tangy side. Very refreshing and tasty. No faults. This bottle says it can be stored at room temperature, so I supposed it is pasteurized.

I believe this beer is also known as "Silver Bottle" when it is imported into the US in bottle form.
Cloudy wheat color with good head. Really strong wheat and yeast scent/flavors with plenty of citrus. Some grain on the nose. Very mild spice, perhaps clove. A little smoother and thicker (yeast and wheat) than most most hefeweizen which usually have a bit more crispness. Enjoyable.
