KimJohansen (6676), Copenhagen V, Denmark Oct 7, 2007 Updated: Dec 25, 2007Hazy golden with goodies floating around. Small off white head. Nice sour aroma that contains grapes, wood, hay and leather. Woody sour flavor with lemon and good complexity. Finishes of rather sour. Brilliant! 19641948 (492), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Oct 5, 2007 Originally received a 4.2 from me on 10/4/05. Tart and musty; plenty of stink. Soured and nose-crinkling. Dry powdery finish. Sometimes toiling to get through. All that said, it was an overall enjoyable experience. I felt accomp, ished finishing it. swoopjones (1862), Buffalo, New York, USA Sep 29, 2007 Updated: Dec 18, 2007Bottle @ Cambrinus.in Brugge. shared with IPFreely. Can’t believe Im starting to like these. Golden color, funky, musty, tart & sour. Can’t wait to try again kramer (2406), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 21, 2007 375 ml bottle. Pours a clear dark gold body on first pour, fairly cloudy on second. Fairly large fluffy fizzy off-white head. Lots of visible carbonation. Aroma is quite funky and just full of stinky cheese and almost-spoiled yogurt. Lots of cellar mustiness and barnyard notes. Quite brash and young smelling. Flavor is much the same, quite tart and funky with minimal acidity. Finishes bone dry, yet there’s almost a dry powdery sugar taste just before the mustiness and light cork take over. Not a whole lot of brett presence. Mouthfeel is very dry with a crisp tartness. Great lively efforvescent carbonation, pretty much perfect. Overall, just about perfect for what I want from a "young" Oude Gueuze. All this needed for greatness was a few years in the cellar. scrizzz (1250), kirkland, Washington, USA Sep 18, 2007 Updated: Feb 9, 2009Great color, pale yellow on the sides of the glass, light amber in the middle. strong carbonation sustaining the thick cotton head. smells like a sour ale and cider. lots of granny smith apple and bartlett pear. very very dry. much more bitter than anything else. ends with a flavor like a tart and acidic underripe pear. DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Sep 16, 2007 375 ml. bottle from Stegosaurus - thanks Joe. Clear gold with a creamy, off white, medium head that settles quickly. Lots of fruitiness, mostly citrus and apple, under an earthy funkiness. The aroma is quite complex, changing as it warms. Lively effervescence and medium body complement an acidic, cleansing palate. The flavor is dominated by the sourness, but there is a light toffee flavor in the background, all culminating in a very dry finish. The more I drink, the more I like it. Definitely better as it warms up, with much of the harshness vanishing, and the complexities more apparent. redlight (1445), Winter Park, Florida, USA Sep 15, 2007 Updated: Aug 23, 2009Apple skins, citrus, hints of nutmeg, lemon zest, horsey, a great aroma. Pours cloudy yellow with an orange center, a thin white head that dissipates. Sour apples, crab apples, skins, kumquat skins, acidic but smooth, tart candy, very clean for a gueuze, but still has a strong tartness. Great gueuze. lordeche (397), Quincy, Massachusetts, USA Sep 14, 2007 Pours fizzy orange-amber with very little head. Aroma of sour apple, lemon, champagne. I haven’t experienced a lambic-gueuze before, and this is quite a experience. Strong citrus and sourness give way to to an almost soy sauce/msg type flavor which I think is what everyone is referring to with the term "barnyard funk". It is not, however, an unpleasant flavor, quite the contrary. I really enjoy this and will definitely sample more of this style.
