COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Lambik until the age of about 6 months (on oak casks) is considered young (Jong in Dutch) and traditionally sold as such. The difference in flavor and palate between both Jong and Oud is substantial.

Please note the age of the sample you are reviewing when entering your rating. While many factors determine whether you have had "Jonge" or "Oude" Lambik, a general rule of thumb is to enter 1 year-old or older lambik under "Girardin Oude Lambik" and anything less than 6 months-old under "Girardin Jonge Lambik".

For those between 6 and 12 months of age, you should take in to consideration the character of the lambik. Samples presenting themselves as hazy/cloudy, with some head-formation and residual sugar should be entered as "Jonge Lambik", while those that are drier, higher in clarity and with little/no head formation should be entered as "Oude Lambik".

From the cask at GBBF, August 2006. Day 1, beer #21. Golden colour. Slight haze. Entirely flat. Some sweetness with moderate acidity although I wouldn’t call it particularly sour. Woody and citric at the same time. Less farmyard than expected in the aroma. Not fully developed yet, but getting there.

UPDATED: FEB 11, 2010 [9/6/09] Tap at some small pub in Pajottenland. Cloudy orange with a bit of white foam. Aroma of wort, some fruits and some yeast. Sourish flavor with some sweet sugariness and fruits. Medium-bodied. Flavor is nice but the aroma is stil too wort-like.

Clear golden orange with no head. Aroma of goose berries and wood. Acidic and sweet flavors with bitter cloudberries notes in the finish. Dry texture. Light to medium body. (On tap at Mikkeller bar 8.5.2010)

Cask at Bier Circus. Bubbly white head, and a still coppery light orange color. Almost a sweetness in both the aroma and taste, lots of grapes, woody, and very vinous. No major carbonation, and not that dry of a finish, medium body. Touch sour, but not one I would say is very funky. Nice drinking, but I prefer older lambics I think.

Beer number two was a unique style that is also one of the main reasons I traveled all the way to Belgium. It’s hard to pin down beers like this as there are not that many in the wild. Still, to try it side by side with the final product gave some insight into the transformation that takes place with time.

Aroma / Appearance - The flat bronze body had no true head or carbonation but was also a bit murky. The smell of a young scotch that has just taken on a sweet edge rises from the glass along with polished bronze doorknobs. Caramel undertones glue it together.

Flavor / Palate - Sherry and sweet caramel taste like drinking some sort of dessert wine. The heavy mouthfeel clings to the mouth’s corners. The finish might be short lived but adds a sugary bite. I wouldn’t want to drink this all the time yet it is an experience that everyone should have at least once.

Darker amber coloured ber, no carbonation nor head. Light oaky, yeasty buttery aroma, maybe some light infection? Full palate. FInish is sweet sour combined, some more heavy dought touches. Not bad, but i suspect an infection of the beer in this case.

Clear golden with nearly no head. Sourish apples hits the nose along with barnyard and wood. Flavour was sourish with sour apples, wood, hay and leather accents. Finished slightly sour.

Tap @ Copenhagen 2010. Clear golden color, no head. Flowery aroma, slight hoppy, tart. Not that sour taste, but quite soft actually.

Ernest (6031) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUL 1, 2005
Draught, Beersel, Hotel Centrum, May 2005. Virtually no head. Body is hazy light amber. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain, caramel), lightly yeast (barnyard). Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation. Not very aromatic or sour, quaffable but not very interesting.
