3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 JorisPPattyn (6745) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - MAY 25, 2003
(White label, commercial)
Deep red, slightly hazy. Very slight pinkish-white head. Sweet nose, artificial-cherry. Sweet, sweet cherries, like cherry-gums. Bweeuk! medium-bodied. Too sweet by any standard, too artifical. Girardin ought to correct this - this is for children.
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 skortila (4160) - Baarn, NETHERLANDS - MAR 11, 2003
UPDATED: MAR 13, 2004 Like Caesar said, for me this is certainly one of the best krieks I ever head. Sweet, fruity, marzipan smell, taste is moderate sour, moderate sweet; in balance. oaky, cherries. palate is a bit dry, moderate bitter.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 caesar (3748) - Bunnik/Utrecht, NETHERLANDS - MAR 10, 2003
UPDATED: DEC 27, 2004 This is one of the best Krieks i’ve had. Not too sweet, definitely oak-conditioned. Complex, well balanced. Very good kriek!
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 joet (1876) - Fulton, California, USA - JAN 13, 2003
Very accessible, only lightly sweet and lightly sour, whole and pure fruit flavors, not much lambic and no brett. Interesting and flawless but I was expecting more mustiness and some brett.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Schroppfy (2335) - Łódż, Warsaw, Poland; Michigan, Ohio, USA - JAN 9, 2003
UPDATED: MAY 30, 2003 ReRerate: 5/30/03: Again, inconsistency problems plague this beer - this time highly carbonated and not syrupy, with excellent aroma characteristic and great sour components, but not all put together. Rerate: 2/01/03: Syrupy; unbelievably sweet and thick...quite different from the first sample. Wow, still great, but must drop a bit. Bummer! Original: 1/09/03: Perfect...Perfect...I though nothing could surpass the Oud Beersel Kriek...this has a tiny bit less yeasty cheesy horseblanketness and even better sweet/sour balance. Very dark and unfiltered. Unbelievable. I am in heaven now.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Ernest (5187) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JAN 4, 2003
UPDATED: MAY 13, 2005 Head is initially small, frothy, pink, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy dark red, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately yeasty (horseblanket, barnyard), with notes of cherries and balsamic vinegar.
Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly astringent. Had two more samples during this trip and just don’t care for it. Not sour enough and not anywhere in the league of Oude Kriek examples from Boon, 3 Fonteinen, etc.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Kaya161 (1128) - San Diego, California, USA - JAN 1, 2003
Reddish-brown hue, with a pinkish, off-white, tall, frothy head. Leathery/barnyard/cherry aroma. Tart, slightly bitter cherry flavour. A great kreik.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 domtom (65) - Bienne, SWITZERLAND - DEC 30, 2002
Nice chestnut-violet colour, very opaque with a nice foam. Interesting and complex aroma of cream and caramel. The flavour is very deep, bitter, peaty. The aftertaste is long with a nice bitterness. A beer with character.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 TinyClanger (41) - West Sussex, West Sussex, ENGLAND - NOV 24, 2002
Poured nicely, with a good nose. Rather sweeter than I like a kriek to be, but enjoyable nonetheless.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 eczematic (1297) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - SEP 8, 2002
weirdly syruppy. oozes out of the bottle like goobers hanging out of yer nose. fresh sweet cherries and stale piss aroma. rich, round, and quite earthy, and not that sour, surprisingly. disconcertingly like straight cordial as mr. pogo notes.
