3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 troyc (2014) - Oklahoma, USA - NOV 2, 2011
[Tap] Tried this at the brewpub in mid-September. Aged in Maker’s Mark barrels. Inky black in color without much head. Nice brown lacing along the sides of the glass as you drink it though. Heavy bourbon nose includes vanilla, fusel alcohols, burnt toffee and espresso. The taste is very similar, with bourbon easily coming to the forefront. Dark brown sugar, oak and noticeable rye dryness come through as well. Frankly, this was insanely alcoholic tasting considering an ABV between 6 and 7%. That lack of balance took away from this beer’s charm for me.

Oak aged version on tap @ the brewery. Pours black with a very small tan head. Aroma of dark roasted barley, bourbon, bread and chocolate. The taste is sweet malt with a bitterness that comes from the big roasted grains. This is a medium bodied beer with a very low carbonation and a smooth silky mouth feel. Great beer overall and will go out of my way to get this again. Superb. ~Moved my rating from the regular version.

On tap at the Bistro Barrel Aged Fest in Hayward. Jim Beam barrel aged. Black in color with a nice small tan head. Aroma is somewhat mild with chocolate, spice, oak, and bourbon. Flavor is sweet and malty with roast and chocolate, rye, bourbon, oak, and vanilla. Fairly complex taste, and a good break from all the more intense beers out there at this event. Medium-bodied and fairly smooth on the palate with soft carbonation. Overall good but not a standout among all the other great beers there.
