4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
I understand this beer is brewed for the West Rib Pub in Talkeetna, Alaska and is occasionaly available at the Glacier Brewhouse (Brewer) in Anchorage. No matter, it packs a whollop.. but you can only get two (albiet 16 oz) glasses; then you have to switch to another of the 12 brews on tap..mostly Alaskan. Distinct flavor of honey, which must be used to boost the alcohol to over 9% !
Good little Pub with plenty of tasty food in the summer season. Worth a visit. Enjoyed the ’fat ass’ sauce on the 1 pound Burger !!

I don’t know how this made it down to Walla Walla, Washington but I am glad it did. On draft at at The Depot. it came a beautiful clear golden color with moderate white head and good lacing. Nose of citrus hops and caramel malts. Mouthfeel is smooth and the alcohol is apparent but not objectionably so. Flavor is sweet caramel hops ad citrus hops and there is a long bitter finish.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Served in a snifter at the BrewHouse. Jewel like copper color with a solid, off-white head that left attractive lacing. Nose of light brown sugar, honey and alcohol. Flavors of sweet pear, apple sauce and white grapes, with a white wine finish. You can taste the alcohol in here. Very dry finish. Nice big beer.

Had this two years ago on my honeymoon. Made me want to move to Talkeetna. A brew disigned to refresh on warm days and warm on cold nights.

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2005 Had on tap at the brewpub in Anchorage as "Imperial Blonde" (Since changed in the databse to reflect that - was also known as Ice Axe Ale). Sparkling golden appearance with a good thick white head with plenty of lacing. Has a clean, honey-like sweet aroma which carries over to the flavor. Also detect a tad bit of frutiness in there and a bit of candied sugar - almost like a Belgian Ale. Mouthfeel is slightly sticky. High ABV is hidden well.

Toast, cookie dough malts and strong alcohol. Lemon and grapefruit hops, some grassy notes too. Finishes light. Thick body, slightly cloying.

6/08/2009: Glacier Brew House Imperial Blonde (a.k.a. Ice Axe Ale) has a delicate pale malt aroma and flavor. There is definitely vanilla and a crème brûlée characteristic alont with hints of spice and honey. This beer is a touch sweet in the front, but that is balanced by a bit of a bite and dry alcohol burn in the finish. This beer has a clear, golden color with a thin white crown and a surprisingly lighter body than expected (medium-light). Overall this is a very interesting and different beer that I liked quite a bit.
"Half snifter" (draught) served in a small white wine glass at the Glacier Brew House in Anchorage, Alaska. Rating #13 for this beer.

(Draft: West Rib Pub in Talkeetna, AK) The locals sent me here to try the Ice Axe Ale, and the bartender claimed it was brewed specially for the pub. Apparently that’s not the case, but it’s still a pretty cool little joint, filled with neat maps and pictures. Anyway, the beer. It tastes like an alcoholic cream ale, sweet, grainy, honey and with lots of alcohol. There’s a moderate bitterness in the finish for some balance, but it’s not really a hoppy bitterness. Creamy mouthfeel, but the body is pretty light, despite the sweetness. Light golden color shows a bit of haze. White head is small on the pour and subsides to a bunch of white dots. It’s a decent beer, but not as great as the locals made it out to be. Then again, with my camera hung around my neck, they probably think I’m another cruise-ship tourist up to see Denali from the tour bus. They’re wrong, I’m here to do some serious hiking up to K’esugi Ridge. And drink some beer too, of course...
