3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
I had to wait a long time for an incredibly large and foamy tan head to settle over a deep mahogany/red body that started clear but clouded late after dropping in the yeast. Malty & fruity/floral aroma with musty, estery yeasts. Flavor finds some sweet caramel notes but the overall flavor is yeasty and tart. Creamy and fluffy with a dry finish. This beer’s Belgian profile far outweighs its Scotch Ale intent... with its dominant yeastiness, it’s more of a malty Belgian Strong.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Super Saver. Hazy brown pour with subdued off-white head. Aromas of caramel malts, some brown sugar, grapes, nuts, and brown sugary peaty funk. The palate is medium to dense, with a nice complexity of flavor, including notes of caramel malt, raisins, brown sugar, and slight old peaty funk. The whole thing never really gets what I would call sweet, but it is more semi-sweet. Well done.

750 ml (bottle #11, COTF 5/06). Big head with a mild smoky aroma that makes you think the abv is higher than 8% Theres some plums and (now that I read some ratings) bubblegum. A solid scotch that tastes of soggy wood.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml capped bottle from Stateline Liquors in Elkton, MD (May 2006), bottle 12/20/05, served at cellar temperature in a Corsendonk Christmas Ale glass. Huge fizz when the cap is popped, and a massive gout of light tan, thickly bubbly foam cascades into the glass, leaving spidery lacing as it rapidly recedes over the translucent pale chestnut body.....malty-toffee nose begins rather faint and indistinct, grows a bit stronger after a short bit adding leafy herbal qualities and light dry Belgian yeast; a nice combination of elements but just not potent enough.....body moderately to very sweet, caramel and fruits in syrup (pears, cherries) with faint hints of smoky fruitwood and plenty of bready yeast, candy sugar....soft prickly carbonation and some dry woody/herbal qualities help keep the sugariness from cloying, and there is absolutely no trace that I can find of alcohol; I would have guessed 6% if I’d tried this blind....this is fairly tasty and interesting but lacks anything truly special to put it up to the top, and after the Ŕ l’Abri de la Tempęte Corne de Brume I had last night, well, it just doesn’t thrill me.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark roasted chestnut color. Tall somewhat rocky beige head. Mild herbs, sea-foam and a light milk chocolate nose. Nothing overpowering or ultra interesting, yet quite refreshing. Light, with quite a bit of eff. on the tongue. Every refill produces another hugh head. Spicy flavors from the first sip. Strong, but not overbearing licorice, allspice, anise all mix with a light smokes syrup. This really is an interesting scotch ale. The palate nearly seems to be too busy. I can see this being a winter belgian ale, that seems to have a few characteristics in common with a scotch ale. I may be more included to call it a strong belgian, but it work either way. Thanks SoLan.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours with a loose but heavy carbonation. Aroma is spiced with some anise. Flavor is of caramel and ginger. Body is a little thin for style and lacking "creaminess". Overall a pleasant surprise. Thanks CaptainCougar.
