Dark ruby red with small beige lace. Dark fruits, apple pie, bit of fresh yeast. Taste has cookie spices, medium sweetness and generally a wintery feel to this one. Not as rich in flavour as I expect form this brewer though. Great looks but overall a bit too thin an not as exciting as I was expecting. (75cl bottle from De Bierwinkel Leiden)

75cl bottle, bottled 11/2013. ABV: 8,7%. - Gusher alert...Pours a fizzy candi sugar cola. Strange pollen and chalk aroma, going on chlorine and wet earth - virtually no sweetness permeating. Are these the Alost Hallertauers? Taste is very centered on candi sugar, yet not cloying: candi sugar dryness, with a burnt caramel edge, some berries at best- Easy drinking, but far from stellar considerign DGT’s range.

Serving: 750 ml. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a hazy ruddy color with a small off white head. Dark dried fruit, dark caramel, and a bit of earth on the nose. Slightly sweet up front with a nice dried fruit note followed by a slight earthy bitterness. Medium bodied. The alcohol remains relatively subdued. Nice winter warmer.

Brewer Jef Van Den Steen is a knowledgeable man when it comes to Belgian beer history and it is a delight seeing a ’Scotch’ type beer, nowadays almost forgotten, emerge as a winter beer, since the most typical Belgian Christmas ales are based on the Scotch style. Light beige head, very dark brown colour; candi syrup, chocolatey malts, pear, banana, cinnamon, coriander in the nose, dark fruity taste with caramelly and chocolatey maltiness and, as the style prescribes, a hint of roasted, coffee-like bitterness in the background. Well made.

Bottle. Moderate aromas all aroung, with roasted and cereal for the malt, cooked orange for the hops, dough for the yeast, with raisin, toffee and brown sugar. Head is small, frothy, off-white with no lacing and is almost fully diminshing. Color is murky brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, slick with a fizzy carbonation. This Scotch Ale is full of dark fruit with just the right amount of sweetness.

Initial aroma of smoked peat. Pours cloudy brown with ok head and lacing. Wasn’t quite what I expected but still good. Finished sweet and sour. Tap at Churchkey.

Bella pesantella, ma all’aspetto dolce e alcolico si contrappone un gustoso carattere fruttato e speziato che la rende più piacevole e bevibile. Birra da fine serata e da inverni freddi e implacabili!
