The pour a ruby brown with a lacy white head. The nose is sour red fruit. The flavor is red fruit, a touch of tartness, brown sugar and finishes with an off dry and slight bitterness. Overall quite balanced.

Purchased at Charles Street Liquors in January. Enjoyed in a wine goblet.
A - Nice clarity burgundy appearance. 2 finger head that faded fast.
S - Smells like burnt toast and grape juice. Hint of candied sugar and pickles.
T - Olives, beets, spices and maple syrup. Some very mellow peachy taste with hints of sweetness but nothing too overwhelming. At the finish, there’s this mild sour tartness.
M - 80% carbonation, medium body. Dry fruit bready at the finish with some sourness.
O - This is a very solid beer. It was pricey but is a nice 750 format and highly drinkable.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TAR (2346) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - AUG 15, 2012
Dark rust. Persistent custardlike froth dots the glass with some lace. Exquisite aromas of black tea, anise, toasted bread, red currants, anise, date sugar, ripe plum, banana bread, rock candy, spice cake, flowery hops, etc. Secondary notes of gum, concord grape and puttylike yeast. Somewhat spicily phenolic, as well. Expansive, softly prickly carbonation. Airy and fiercely spicy with immediate clove warmth and alcohol. Immensely luscious, multilayered malt soon takes foothold as it offers up a deep spice cookie and plummy brightness along with fresh baked banana bread and an earthy breadcrust contrast. Considerable residuals from the candy sugar, though there is plenty of underlying gummy, yeasty luster and fruity esters to thwart any cola-like character from encroaching. Otherwise the sugar purely dazzles with malt-enhancing sweetness. High attenuation and exceptionally clean malt makes for endless quaffability. Telltale lilac-drenched Styrians add to the appetizing nature as they assertively deliver a lip-smacking wallop. Dried fruit twang imparts the faintest bit of flabbiness, but stops shy of overexertion thanks to the ongoing firm maltiness. Closes dryly malty, firmly cookielike and phenolic with an equilibrium of caramelized raisin and sassy clove accompanied by a tardy flourish of bright floral hop burps. Aside from the minor flabbiness, this is a quality dubbel all-around.

Bottle from web shop Belgian Beer Station.
Hazy amber. Moderate carbonation. Very beautiful tan foam, creamy and stable.
Aroma is sweet, toasted malts, caramel, fruity freshness. Very inviting.
Taste: wonderful and unique, rather complex with sweetness, sourness and bitterness, all well balanced. Full and sweet finish with a touch of bitterness.
Mouthfeel: medium body, not too sticky sweet
Overall: a very well balanced "Dobbel Speciale Belge": a mix of 2 styles, a perfect blend of the malty sweetness of a double and the freshness of a speciale belge

750 ml bottle into chalice, bottled 4/28/2007(over 5 years!) Pours lightly hazy dark reddish copper color with a small 1 finger off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Slight spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big prune, raisin, toast, molasses, apple, caramel, toffee, earth, herbal, biscuit, red grape, and yeast spices. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity. A bit malty sweet, but it was expected with the age of this bottle. Taste of caramel, toast, molasses, toffee, raisin, prune, earth, herbal, pepper, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of dark fruit, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, and yeast spices on the finish for a short bit. Nice flavor balance and complexity; but slightly light and dry on the finish. No cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. This is definitely a sipper. Overall this is a very nice Dubbel. This held up well and definitely caramelized over time. A lot of flavor complexity and nice balance. Would not mind trying a less aged bottle in the future.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Swaroga (790) - Brussels, BELGIUM - JUL 29, 2012
75cl bottle. Dark amber liquid, lightly hazy with thick tanned head. Nose : burned toast, some tart and caramel. Cheese, dry raisins. Sip : low to medium density, low carbonation , creamy texture. Fluffy beer needs to be properly chilled and poured lively into the glass to take away some of the mouthful feeling after swallowing. Sweet tart with some dried fruit esters. Ending is well hopped and bitter. It doas tastes like a mix of a GB bitter beers and Belgian typical estery brown. Not bad and the alcohol is well hidden. Not bad.

750ml capped bottle pours a hazy orange brown color with a 2 finger off-white head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is caramel with some light fruits, hops and yeast. Taste is a dominant caramel and light fruity sweetness followed up with some mild hop bitterness and hints of yeast. Medium bodied with some nice carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, a nicely done strong ale and very much appreciated.

Clear dark amber with a bubbly head and heavy streaks of lace. Taste is caramel with a little shot of sour apple. Grows nicely through the palate before a smooth fade at the finish. No hops needed. Recommended.
