3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Sigmund (4280) - Tau, NORWAY - NOV 11, 2003
UPDATED: NOV 20, 2005 Rerate, 2005, 330 ml bottle: This is the first year that this beer is actually brewed by Lervig in Stavanger, but they haven’t changed the recipe much since it was contract brewed by Mack/Trio. "Gledelige" has been added to the name. It is still a very unpretentious "klasse D" juleøl, but I somehow think the hops are slightly better this year. Easy drinking, not offensive, OK with a meal, but not a "big" beer in any way.
Original rating, 2003: (330 ml bottle). Norwegian "klasse D" Yule beer. Copper coloured, good head. Malty aroma with hints of caramel and oak. You don’t expect much from the grocery store versions of "juleøl" - and (at least in this case) you don’t get much either. Nothing offensive about it, just a one-dimensional beer with some maltiness (but not too sweet) and just a hint of toffee and oak - hardly any spices. Okay to wash down a meal, but for Christmas you want something better than this!
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 OleR (4248) - Oslo, NORWAY - JAN 12, 2008
500 ml can (thanks to Sigmund). Shiny amber color. Low greyish head quickly reduced to some tiny islands of foam. Nice toffee/cream-caramel aroma. Also notes of sweet dark fruits. Sweet-flavored with caramel and toffee again. Medium bitterness. Slim body. Sugar and mild bitterness in the ending. Enjoyable, but a bit thin.
3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Gr0ve (2040) - Oslo, NORWAY - MAR 13, 2010
500 ml bottle. Crystal clear brown colour. Tall light beige fine-laced head. Floral hops aroma with hints of nuts and raisins. Some chocolate. Crisp carbonation level. The beer is quite bitter for a Christmas beer like this, but it is not any less interesting because of that, quite the opposite. If feels refreshing and lively on the palate. Reminds me a lot of a clean and tasty brown ale.
