Cask, at Newark Beer Festival, May 2004. Notes recovered from a recently unearthed old notebook. Gold colour. A little better than the Fletchers Campaign from the same brewery that I tasted at the same festival, but not much. In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t have risked this but I thought the first beer must have been an off batch. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Although the aroma did not have the acetone that I found in the Fletchers Campaign, this was replaced by a very grainy, sweaty, under-brewed malt character. And there was the same sourness in the flavour suggesting infection problems at the brewery. Drinkable (just) but hardly enjoyable.

cask, old moot hall, nottingham. the second beer from this newish brewery on tap at the local within days of the first being withdrawn. as i remember this was too. both were really not nice, almost cidric with metal and sulpher thrown in. would recommend a taste before embarking on a pint. of course it could have been a bad batch, or bad transport (certainly nothing to do with the pub) because both beers tasted similarly strange. having thought about it, i find it hard to imagine a new brewer would thing it was suitable to sell in the state it was in, thus giving me hope that it was a rogue batch, so do not take my word as gospel.
