3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask. Black with a dense, foamy tan head, leaves full lacing. Aroma is chocolate, leather. Body is medium, slightly foamy, low carbonation. Taste is roasted barley, date, touch of ash, slight metallic tang. A very drinkable stout … but probably trying to push the definition of an imperial stout a bit too far!

Half at 5 bells Kent. Dark deep red. White foam head. Some coffee, wood and burnt notes. Light body for a stout. Smoky on palate with a tinge of bitterness. Bit of a watery finish which let’s it down. Okay

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cask at Battersea Beer Festival, 9th Feb 2011. Very dark brown with a small bubbly tan head. Rich, roasted coffee and chocolate nose. Burnt notes at the back of the throat give it a persistent aftertaste. Smooth but the burnt toast flavours would put me off having another.

Chelmsford Beer Festival. Opaque dark brown beer, no real head. Smooth low carbonation palate. A little roasty malt with bitter licorice. A smooth but pretty grapefruit bitter finish. Ok but a few too many rough edges.

Hand pulled cask at the Black Lion, Lynsted. Black with a creamy tan head. Although far from imperial, this is a class stout, with chocolate roasty notes, hoppy finish and a little sourness. complex and moreish.
