Intensely flavoured, malty, hoppy, strong ale that makes your mouth water. Amber/brown in colour and full bodied.

Cask at The Green Dragon, Leek (JDW) A clear deep amber colour with a medium off white head. Aroma of caramel, some toasted malts, slight nuts, a little fruit, a hint of ash and subtle earthy hops. Taste of caramel, fruits, some wood, slight nuts, a little ash and subtle earthy hops. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A dryish but slight astringent ashy bitterness in the finish. There’s like a smoky, ashy kinda taste throughout and the finish is a little astrigent. Started off ok but hard to drink after a while. Shame.

Smells like dishwater. Tastes better - hints of toffee, pine, malt. Not bad but nothing to rave about

Tasted this in the Salt Cot, Saltcoats (JDW) on the 14th February 2016. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear tawny in colour with a thin white head. Strong bitter hops present in the long aroma. Thin resiny mouthfeel and poor lacing. Mixed malts give a biscuit base with dry woody notes of tart redcurrant fruit. Aftertaste is redolent with strong hop resins giving a dry astringency which is strong on the palate. Finish is very bitter with dry notes of leather, oak cask and damp hop flowers. Thought this lack lustre ESB tasted far weaker than the ABV suggests. Not impressed by this, lacking in body and complexity.

Cask a the Lych Gate Tavern, Wolverhampton. Mid-brown with a creamy head and lots of lacing. Malt, toast, acorn scent. Touch of astringency. Sweet berry/nut taste turns to an angular sour-bitter at the end of the sip. Medium to long bitter-astringent finish. Not my cup of tea sadly.

Cask at the Simeon Arms during the Isle of Wight Jolly. Pours clear amber-gold with a creamy, white head. The nose holds bread, toasted caramel and faint chocolate.
