Ritterguts Gose is a top-fermented, sourish and slightly salty-tasting beer that was first brewed in 1824 – it’s the special beer of Leipzig! The Gose is an own, very old type of beer that does not correspond to the German purity law because Gose is much older than it. Even today, it is still brewed with an admixture of coriander and salt in the traditional way with a special yeast in open fermentation. Its particular character our Gose gets thereby and by lactate fermentation during the maturing.

Pours a slightly hazy golden peach color with a two finger fizzy head that fizzes out quickly. On the nose there is some nice round cereal malt, yogurt tartness and a nice dose of lemony citrus. On the palate its bright and refreshing with a great base maltiness that holds up nicely to the ripe tartness and citrus flavors. Perfectly balanced and amazingly drinkable... I love me a nice gose!

Golden color with some foam. Malty and a little sourish smell. The taste is malty, moderately carbonated and with hints of salt and sourness. The aftertaste is okay, but not noteworthy.

Bottle. I had one each of the 2015 version and the ones before and they have noticeable differences in color, aroma and taste. I am reviewing the 2015er version here. Orange-yellow colored, cloudy and sparkling, with a small white frothy head. The characteristic sourness is directly welcoming the nose. Along with it, there are slight citrus and lemon notes, as well as grapes which reminds of champagne. The taste is heavily sour as well as light salty in the end and develops some acid. Flavor is also dominated by sourness and resembles with the fruity and citrus notes the flavors of lemon and champagne. The body is light to medium with strong carbonation. Leaves a sour aftertaste.

0,5 l bottle, bought at Grebhan´s, Bremen. Murky pale golden in the glass, mighty off white head. Musty sourish and salty on the nose. Taste starts very salty, than followed by a short grainy sequence. Later little bit citrus fruity, bready with salt. Nice on a very hot summer night like this, but not for every day.

In bottiglia.

Pours a clear golden orange, with a small white head. The aromas are oranges, lemons, and wheat. The taste is mildly sour, dry and moderately bitter, and ever so slightly salty, but only enough to actually give the beer a refreshing kick. The mouthfeel is light and effervescent, and the aftertaste is moderately long.

Pours an ever so slightly hazy light yellow body with a white head that settles quickly without leaving trace. Nose is mild with notes of funky yeast, wheat, coriander and salt spray. The taste is quite interesting with a mix of sour berries, saltiness like that found in soy sauce and a mild bitter finish that doesn’t last at all. Medium creamy carbonation and oddly filling palate. This is unlike any beer I ever tried and I expected it to be quite awful. This is oddly nice, though.

Bottle shared and split. Poured into a brandy snifter. The beer is a hazy copper with a white head of foam. The aroma has wheaty, bready notes throughout and a touch of acidity. The taste carries that wheaty note through and then at the finish the acidity and salt come through nicely. Medium body and medium carbonation. Very nice beer.

At the magic tree. Not sure what happened with this draft. As below, was expecting a somewhat salty thinner beer but this was not like any gose I ever had in the states. A little sticky and viscous from the start. Could not detect any salt or tartness what so ever. Odd, seems like a mildly hopped apa. Quite disappointing for this style. Will have to try it again if I ever see it again.

Many thanks for this beer to kevnic2008. Piwo jasne klarowne z poczatku, potem lekko zmetnione. Zapach stechlizny, mokrej scierki, ale fajne to aromaty no i troche kwiatow lakowych, tak mi sie kojarzy. Smak zupelnie inne i niestandardowe gose, ciut soli sporo przyjemnej kwaskowosci, kapusty kwaszonej jakby:) pszeniczne zbozowe ziarno takze wyczuwalne. Bardzo smaczne lekkie piwo doskonale i podkreslajace syty posilek. Ciekawa i historyczna etykieta. Polecam.

Bottle. Orangey-gold slight haze, decent head, nose is unremarkable, mouth is a well balanced mix of malt, cider apples, hay, toasted pecan, tartness and salt. Refreshing and very tasty. Prost!
