1.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottled. Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is rice, maize, malts and some slight notes of hops. Flavour is quite much the same, a rather sweet, and rather boring beer.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Golden Brau from Karlovacka pivovara, Croatia. Very watery and without character. Colour is quite nice, typical for Pilsners. The best part is pleasant hoppiness but the notes of corn ruins it. Taste and smell is quite industrial. Sweet and bit bitter aftertaste, quickly diminishes.

2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
UPDATED: AUG 23, 2008 1.5 l green plastic bottle from local Mercator. Well, who would say I’ll find my first Romanian beer here. With another "smart" move (Croatian) Karlovacka pivovara started to contract brew it. ABV 4.8%, 11° extract. It poured pale yellow body with big fluffy head. Pretty fine aroma, some herbal hoppiness, mixed with weak honey and corn like malt. Well, the flavor is way too watery. Sweetish, somewhat corny, but not too much to become nasty, drinkable, but without any character, just like flavored water. Also sweetish finish, allright, pleasant, but somehow artificial and boring. Not so bad as I’ve expected, drinkable during a summer day, but still boring, definitely deserves lower rate, but aroma and appearance did their job.

1.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 7/20
1.5l green plastic bottle, contract brewed since very recently by Karlovačka Pivovara
Gee... this was one brilliant decision by the Heineken people. Guess they ran out of gimmicky packaging "innovations" so they had to actually introduce a new product. And noooo, why bother with adding new beers to the Karlovačko line, inventing new recipes, trying some new styles, when you can just start contract brewing a pale lager or whatever from Romania (which is hardly considered a synonym for good beer here)... "The new beer with a golden taste." Sheer marketing brilliance. En par with their recent decision to put everything (I guess) in green bottles.
This almost fails at being golden, very pale and dull yellow-golden colour with a huge white head that went away fast, damn fizzy in the beginning. One can actually detect some herbal hops in the nose, mixed with some dust and some bad maltiness. Better than expected Weak taste. That same herbal-dusty hopiness (Saaz?), some weak lemoniness and fruity maltiness and maybe bready at times. Hints of eggs at times. Distinctly watery, salty (and maybe a touch sourish), with just a weak bite from the hops. Would’ve been more interesting with a fuller body. Not an utter failure, but a completely and utterly unnecessary addition to the Croatian market. I have yet to see how it’ll perform when in its intended habitat and function. The hand of someone (me) drinking in the park with a bunch of friends. I also wonder how it compares with the other versions...
