2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 biz82 (1328) - austin, Texas, USA - NOV 19, 2004
Golden in color (who would have thought?) with decent carbonation. Slightly sour malt aroma. The overall impression is of a watered down German lager but wait...there is a very strong smell and flavor of smoke and a taste of oak. It appears that this is aged in charred oak which adds an interesting element. The bottle I had seemed a little off but then it was 8000 miles from home.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2008 "won gold medals" ??? Were the judges on drugs? A heavy pour and only a white one-fingered head that faded quickly leaving no lace. Clear light amber color. Light carbonation and very light bodied. Starts with hints of hops and malt, no distinct flavor, really just a watery lawnmower beer. ABV is listed as <5%. Overpriced at $1.75 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits, Acton, Ma.

Nice beautiful head. Lots of armoa with a hit of smokeyness to it. I taste a little bitterness to it too. Beautiful bright golden color look to it. Because of the smokey smell, it definately will go well with tandoori foods. Pretty good beer to drink for any occassions.
0.9 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 2/20 IslandHaole (1053) - Yokosuka-Shi, Kanagawa-Ken, JAPAN - MAY 14, 2004
Had to laugh when I read the commercial description "one of the seven best beers in the world", too damned funny! A medium golden color, clear with little head, fizzy. Smell is sweet and has a chemical quality, like a cleaning solvent....a resinous scent. An unusual mild rauch-like flavor up front but the artificial plastic chemical taste is there shortly after. Thin bodied and just too artificial tasting to drink the whole bottle.
2.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Braudog (4473) - Hampton, Virginia, USA - APR 4, 2004
Straw-colored active beer with a foamy head that went away relatively quickly. Previous rater nailed the olive oil aroma that also resides in the flavor ... peaty, maybe a little bit smoky, woody ... yet light body and vaguely sweet. Interesting and different for a light lager.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 PorterPounder (3944) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - OCT 17, 2003
Has an olive oil like aroma to it. Light golden appearance with a thin, quickly dissipating white head. A bit cloudy as well. The flavor has a bit of a smoked essence to it. Initally inviting it ends up being cloying by the end of the 650 ml bottle. Also detect some honey sweetness in there as well. Sort of reminds me of sweet barbecue sauce. Creamy mouthfeel. Would probably make a good compliement to a Tandori platter in an Indian restaurant - the smokiness would compliment the food well. Have to give it points for character though - not your everyday subcontinent lager.
1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 2/20 Kinz (2694) - Glen Allen, Virginia, USA - SEP 27, 2003
Golden color, very fizzy, a bit of a flowery aroma. Initial flavor (when ice cold) not bad, some malty DMS flavors, and something undefineable floating in the background. As the beer warmed, that something I couldn't place became stronger. Anise perhaps? A sort of bizarre chemical note? The peat mentioned by others here? By the time this reached what would normally be a good drinking temperature, it had spiralled downward into a nasty funk that defies all comment. Leave this one alone.

Light golden. Very carbonated up front; the spritzer quickly turned watery. Fruity (apples, yeast) notes popped up here and there. Papery and cardboardy notes were stronger though. And then there was this hard-to-define, peppery spice. Drain pour. Maybe I got a bad one.
