For the Spring 2014 Release in our Custom IPA Series we’ve partnered with the LA River Revitalization Corp to brew 2020 IPA—a dark red IPA, with a rich pine aroma, light roast, all balanced by a hearty hop bitterness. 2020 IPA celebrates the Greenway 2020 Project, which will connect 51 miles of the LA River—transforming it from a neglected, concrete riverbed to a connected, public green space by the year 2020.

Draft at the brewery. Pours clear copper with a fizzy off white head. Tastes like sweet malt, caramel, some booze, and grapefruit hops. Medium body and low/medium carbonation. Smells like sweet caramel, orange citrus hops, malty, and light booze.

Draft. Crimson-colored, dark but very clear. Sticky layer of sandy tan. Aroma is grapefruit peel, pine needles, caramel, biscuits and a little toast. The flavor begins with Hawaiian honey rolls, followed closely by citrusy and floral hop character and finishing with a flash of caramel and subtle toast. Good balance, finishes squeaky clean.

$5 Sunday draft at Aces and Ales. Pours Amber with a pillowy beige head. Aroma is pine, grapefruit, a hint of lime and mango. Flavor is caramel, mango up front leading to grapefruit and pine bitterness. A bit of rye spice as well. Solid.

Type: 16-oz. can Glass: Stone Ruination pint glass From: Trader Joe’s in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif. Price: 2.88 Purchased: March 1, 2015 Consumed: March 8, 2015 Misc.: Canned on Jan. 28, 2015 at 5:02 p.m. Poured an auburn, lighter brown, murky color with three fingers of khaki tan, rocky head. Couldn’t see any bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Uneven, layered, foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Good retention. A good-looking beer. (Sight - 4.25) Very nice on the nose. Got wet Cascade, pine, rye, sugary powdered iced tea, honey grass, herbal, menthol and some peach. (Smell - 3.88) Tasted a lot like what I got in the nose. That powdered Nestle iced tea really leads the way. Also wet Cascade, earthy rye, pine, sharp Citra, honey, herbal and menthol. Doesn’t taste anywhere near 7.4 percent, even tasting a bit like a earthy pale ale. (Taste - 3.88) Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average carbonation. Longer finish. (Feel - 4.00) This was a pretty good IPA. I’d love to have it again. (Overall - 3.88) 3.91 88 B+

16 oz. can from Trader Joe’s. It pours a very dark, clear amber color with an off white head. Super dark for an IPA. The aroma is floral and piney with strong toasted and caramel malt. Maybe even a hint of molasses. The flavor is malty up front with more toast and burnt caramel. Lots of floral and piney bitterness, but not much hop flavor. Caramel comes through more as it warms, but it manages to finish pretty dry despite the heavy malt profile. Not really my thing at all.

Pour from a tall boy can. Nice big hoppy beer. Citrus forward. A complex malt finish. Something odd in the finish that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

It might have been that I just have higher expectations for a "craft" IPA, but this one was well below my expectations. More of a session beer than a full IPA.

Sweet with some soft carbonation and a frothy mouthfeel. A working man’s IPA without much complexity. 2020’s nose is salt water taffy and lime. Golden Road has yet to produce a stunning India Pale Ale.

Nose is distinct of pine hops. Starts a bit malty. Mouth feel is medium bodied and a bit carbonated. Finishes with a piney hop bite. Taste very fresh. One of the best beers from golden road I’ve had.
