Brewed for the 2011 Brew NZ Awards Festival category (“Let’s go… black”), this style defining Imperial Black Pilsner takes the second Black Emperor recipe, tweaks the malt bill, fiddles with the hops and unleashes a brand new death star of Pilsnery goodness wrapped in a black cloak

Tried this at Beervana, had tasted The Black Emperor previously so was really looking forward to tasting this and wasn’t let down. A fantastic dark malt driven Black Pilsner, that had a lot of roastiness and hops with a higher ABV. I think this was even better than the original and would love to see it in bottles.

huge rich roasted character, fudge and nuts in the nose. Very rich. Mouth is full bodied. Lots of roastiness. Big bitter finish. Totally awesome

Tap at Beervana. Pitch black pour with a small off white head. Lots of coffee intertwined with citrus hops on the nose. Much the same in the taste. Coffee and citrus hops finishing with a little bit of tar. Mouthfeel is a little thin but bitterness lingers for a good amount of time. Solid

This was rather a quixotic brew and was served by the barmaid’s recommendation. Deep black with perfumy hoppy notes interspersed with coffee and charry roast and a head that was there one moment and gone the next. Upon tasting, the flavours were similar to the aroma with good carbonation and a finish that lent more to the char (but was still rather enjoyable). A good quaffing pint this one, reminiscent of Kostritzer.
