COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"The adventure is in the bottle! Rock Hard Ten Ale." Note: Golden West Brewing is a holding company that holds Butte Creek Brewing. Neither seem to have been successful at making money, and Golden West is taking a shot at making even better beers that will attract buyers willing to pay the costs of production. Mateveza was one of those endeavors.

Bottle from the Liqour Barn in Redding, CA. Poured an amber and smelled of floral and citrus hops. This was the perfect amount of hops for an IPA. I was pleasantly surprised with the smoothness of this beer. Like others have said the malty backbone is an excellent attribute of this beer. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to try this one again.

Bottle, thanks to Bikesandbeer for sharing. Pours a clear red-amber with a white ring. Big malt/hops aroma, with sweet dark fruits and molasses notes. Taste is very malty and toasty, with dark fruits, molasses, and bitter hops. Lingering bitter toastyness. A bit different and tasty.

timfoolery (661) - California, USA - JUN 18, 2008
Bottle from Liquor Barn in Redding, CA. (Didn’t know this one was Butte Creek...) This brew wasn’t as hoppy as most Imperial IPAs, but it made up for it in the flavor department. The hops were complex, as the flavors were of citrus fruits and flowers. Excellent palate and unlimited drinkability!

This Imperial IPA pours a medium amber color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel malts and grapefruity hops. A medium bodied Imperial IPA. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. Lots of slightly roasted malt flavor. The hops are grapefruity and piney. A decent balance between the malts, hops and alcohol. Good carbonation. Butte Creek Big beers are usually Train Wrecks, this one is very good, a nice balance of flavors. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is crisp and clean. The aftertaste is bitter with a touch of alcohol.

Pours a nice amber color with a fluffy lasting head. Aroma of floral hops, pepper, and some caramel malts. The flavor had notes of floral and citrus hops with some toasted caramel malt backbone. Not overly sweet, but not overly hoppy either. It finishes with a little bit of alcohol.

This amber ale poured with a decent off-white head that didn’t last long, and a nice hop aroma. The flavor is dominated by hops and there is a short and sweet malt finish. This is great brew for hopheads.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with riversideAK (thanks!). Poured a deeper and clear amber color with a large sized off white head. Aromas of citrus, a little spicy, floral hops, and light caramel. Tastes of citrus with some caramel. Light alcohol in the finish but overall well hidden.

Bomber from Ray’s Liquor in Chico, CA. The bottle had a Butte Creek cap. Hearty malt and hop aroma. Seems to be citrus hop. Slightly reddish amber color with a white head that flattened rather rapidly. Medium body with creamy carbonation. The hop is floral and a little grapefruit citrus. The malt is smooth, roasted caramel. There are so many quality ingredients in this ale that it is mind boggling. The alcohol does tend to come through towards the finish. The finish is decently dry, and the hop persists and builds. There is almost a medicinal tang here. Mouth gets a little coated, and a little puckered. It’s good stuff. Don’t think this is the 10th anniversary recipe. Checked my notes on that, and this is more roasted, and probably less citric.
