Bottle 50cl, nose is honey like, aroma is nutty with peppery hops, high carbonation, light honey notes again. Finish has wet paper touch, watery notes, toasted caramel dominant.

Vom Faß in der Brauereigaststätte, Zeil am Main. - Tiefes Goldgelb, klar (obwohl als „naturtrüb“ bezeichnet); sahniger, leicht beigefarbener Schaum. - Nase sehr mild, kaum wahrnehmbar. - Antrunk sehr mild hellmalzig und leicht süß. Schwach zitronige Noten, leicht seifig, ganz zarte Karamelnote. Mild rezent. Im Abgang schwach grasige, leicht fruchtige Hopfen-bittere. Nachtrunk nur schwach bitter. - Nach dem famosen Rauchbier von Göller eine Enttäuschung: ungewöhnlich mild und zu schwach gehopft für ein richtiges Kellerbier, trotz interessanter Geschmacksnuancen. Gäbe ein ordentliches Helles ab. Immerhin recht süffig.

Bottle at home. Naturally slightly cloudy with a tight, creamy lasting head. The typical German lager style is toned down to give a smooth, quenching corny maltiness balanced by a hint of hops. Classic beer.

Opaque amber, strong white head. herbs with malt on the nose. Lovely slightly smokey flavour, sweet, herby and malty. I like this one.

Ordentliches Keller mit etwas Hefe, ein wenig Malz und ein paar nussigen Momenten. Karamell und Gras spielen ebenfalls eine Rolle. Nicht schlecht.

Pours out of the bottle in a cloudy light amber colour with low head and smooth body. Aroma of yeast and wheat. Taste of light yeast, wheat, bread, straw and dust. Nice but nothing special.

500ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pale amber with a big off-white head. Sweet malt aroma with some floral hop notes. Taste is sweet malt and a rather hoppy finish.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein trübes goldgelbes Bier mit ordentlichem Schaum. Geruch malzig, hopfig, grasig. Geschmack hopfig grasig, malzig, leicht würzig.

Characteristic beer from Lower-Franconia in Bavaria, where this is a much appreciated style. It is very lightly carbonated, as traditionally the pressure is allowed to go off the barrel. Cloudy and bready, this is a marvellous representative of the style. Very tasty, and not to be drunk too cold. The label is in copperplate style, a little drab, showing a timber-framed building probably somewhere in Zeil am Main, the home of this beer, and, as is the custom with smaller German breweries, several different styles of lettering. Also there’s a golden depiction of the gable stone with the Emperor Henry II and his wife Cunigund, symbolically (the empeor died in 1024) commemorating the year 1514, when the town received its official licence to brew beer. The brewery, then called ’Zur alten Freyung’, has been in business ever since. Quite a good effort, really, brewing top-quality beers for half a millenium...
