Characteristic beer from Lower-Franconia in Bavaria, where this is a much appreciated style. It is very lightly carbonated, as traditionally the pressure is allowed to go off the barrel. Cloudy and bready, this is a marvellous representative of the style. Very tasty, and not to be drunk too cold. The label is in copperplate style, a little drab, showing a timber-framed building probably somewhere in Zeil am Main, the home of this beer, and, as is the custom with smaller German breweries, several different styles of lettering. Also there’s a golden depiction of the gable stone with the Emperor Henry II and his wife Cunigund, symbolically (the empeor died in 1024) commemorating the year 1514, when the town received its official licence to brew beer. The brewery, then called ’Zur alten Freyung’, has been in business ever since. Quite a good effort, really, brewing top-quality beers for half a millenium...

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is dark yellow. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain/bread), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), with a hint of soap. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter, faintly husky. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Starting the day off on a positive note here. This is solid...nice crusty malt and hop characters, well-balanced and textured, lasting head, etc. The only quibbles are a faint bit of huskiness and soapiness, but they’re quite minor and not very noticeable (esp. if you were drinking out of a wide-mouthed mug instead of a curved wine glass). Good stuff.

Hazy golden color with a nice fluffy off-white head, that keeps a very nice lacing.. Clear amber body. Barley malt aroma with some sweetness. Flavor is like the aroma but with a moderate bitterness. Low carbonation. Mouthfeel is sweet barley.

Bottle. Greyish amber with a pudding-like yesty haziness. Short head though. Aroma is damp basement filled with grain, some wet wood, floral notes and a peppery, herbal hoppiness. Nice. Light sweet taste ending with a moderately bitter finish. Basement and malty taste, some nuttiness retronasal. A balanced and hearty beer, even if the carbonation is a bit too high.
