3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 14/20 EithCubes (3340) - GERMANY - JUL 4, 2006
Swing-top bottle. Clear, pale amber/copper with little head. Smoke aroma with nice light (colored) woodiness. Smells strongly but not overpoweringly (coughschlenkerlascough, no, really, cough). Ditto on the taste, also a bit sweeter than expected. I experience the taste of wood as separate from the taste of smoke, as if the wood hadn’t been charred, thinking I might prefer a little bit of synergy. Watery. Somewhat original - it’ll be harder to find a lighter Smoked. Thanks to pivnizub!
2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 bierkoning (8109) - La Tropica, NETHERLANDS - JUN 5, 2006
Strong smoke aroma, ham and beechwood. The flavor is just a extreme. Beechwood especially. Fruity esters are severely restricted. Too much for me, I’m afraid.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 JonMoore (1573) - Loughborough, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - MAY 17, 2006
Bottle. Nice looking bronze/dark gold colour with a slim off-white head. Light smokey aroma. More smoke in the taste, with some malts and a long smokey finish. Smooth and very drinkable. I like this, but I guess the quality varies looking at some of the other reviews.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 leaparsons (6333) - Leicester, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - MAY 14, 2006
bottle. Deep gold and amber with an off-white head. Aromas are smoky with toffee and citrus. Slightly woody with resinous citrus. Flavours are malty with resinous lemon and some metal. Lightly smoky with some creaminess. Not in the same league as Schlernkerla, but still a decent drink.

Orange appearance with a gentle smokiness. In fact it was more toasted than smoked.Still a nice beer though.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Mungo (2472) - Southampton, Hampshire, ENGLAND - MAY 4, 2006
Bottle @ Reading Beer Festival 2006. Some smokey ham. Smooth with some malts and more light smoke in the finish. Quite nuice but not exceptional.
2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Joeh (2036) - Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND - APR 4, 2006
Bottle, Beers of Europe. Golden. Aroma of light smoke. To taste this is (slightly) pissy lager with a little smoke. Not enough smoke to make this an interesting smokebier and the beer underneath isn’t good enough to make tihs an interesting normal beer. Most of this went down the drain, needs more smoke.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 maeib (6637) - Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, ENGLAND - MAR 25, 2006
Bottled. A dark gold coloured beer with a slight off-white head. The aroma is nice sweet smoke, subtle smoked meats to the fore. The taste is also nice smoked malts. Not overpowering like Schlenkerla; but still lovely character. Other smoles may have fuller bodies, but this is still a top drink.
3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 chriso (7065) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - FEB 22, 2006
Bottle, at Battersea Beer Festival. Nice burnished bronzey gold colour. Opportunities to sample a new rauchbier don’t come round that often, so I was looking forward to this one. I was disappointed. There’s plenty of smoky character on the nose but the flavour rather lets it down. Thin, metallic and lager-ish. Opinions seem divided on this one and I wonder whether we got one from a dodgy batch.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 MesandSim (7109) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - FEB 13, 2006
A Mes rate:
Bottle from the Battersea Beer Fest. Ok Duff warned me this wasn’t anything to write home about but hey, it’s a rate. I was particularly spurred on by my new found love for smoked beer. Shame then that it was pretty poor. For all the world like a crap lager with (as we all agreed) the run off from a George Forman grill cooking bacon. Yes the smokey notes were there and they were this beers only redeeming feature. An awful pills made only marginally better with some beechwood smokeyness. I am amazed at the rates for this one but hey, its mostly about personal preference huh?
