Orange-gold, clean, lightest Rauch I’ve ever seen; with very fine-bubbled, stable off-white head. Imperial smoked ham. Unbelievable - doesn’t yield anything to Schlenkerla in the nose, extremely clean at the same time. Malty and smoked taste, pure beechwood smoke, like an open campfire, or the new potatoes out of its smoldering ashes - and a bit of Schinken, selbstverständlich . Great! Rather light bodied. Aftertaste gives a mineral combination of bitter and salt, before yielding sweetness, dessert-wine like! Very original Rauchbier, paler and lighter than any sofar. But the taste doesn’t bow to any.

Bottle. Nice looking bronze/dark gold colour with a slim off-white head. Light smokey aroma. More smoke in the taste, with some malts and a long smokey finish. Smooth and very drinkable. I like this, but I guess the quality varies looking at some of the other reviews.

Aroma is a smoked cheese and ham wheaty roll of goodness coated in honey. Taste is like a honey roast ham with cheese sause and biscuts.

Bottle from BOE 28-09-07 Pours amber with a tight white head, nice looking beer with good clarity. Smoked bacon initially then this wanes and I get a sort of burnt cabbage and bacon smell. The taste is very smokey like a bratwurst I know that the smokiness is probably fooling me into thinking this but this beer does have an initial meatiness from it, eventually the sweet malts emerge sooty faced from the burning embers as if to demonstrate that this beer does have more facets to its character than just being a smokey joe. Slowly as more air gets to it and I linger over drinking this beer the smokiness mellows to reveal a touch of bitterness along with those sweet malts, this is a wonderful beer.

500 ML flip-top bottle in Germany. Pours a light brown color and nice off white head. Aroma is of light smoke and malt. Not as stong as most smoked beers. Taste is very much the same a nice light smoky taste palate is not over powering like most smoked beers. This was a class grade a smoked beer! A bit light but right on target.

Bottle… February in Franconia (2011)… Pours hazy and dirty orange with a ridiculously large, pillowy, white head. Great retention, but it finally dissipates. The bouquet is very reminiscent of the spiced, smoked hams Mom would buy across the state-line in Virginia and serve each Christmas day – the spices may have been her own personal touch, or maybe not. Notes of biscuit and medium roasted malts also abound. Full-bodied with tingly carbonation. The flavor is remarkably well-balanced, even at room temperature. Like the aroma, the flavor offers plenty of beechwood smoke, sweet malts and spicy hops. Finishes fairly crisp and very, very clean. Thanks go out to erlangernick and Koelschtrinker for making this month of Franconia lagers possible!
