3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 rajendra82 (807) - Alpharetta, USA - JUN 21, 2006
Received in a BIF from orbilar0x, this 12 oz. bottle was my first taste of Goose Island. The beer poured clear, with a deep golden color, and a three finger thick head. The carbonation was very active and was constantly swirling up from the bottom of the glass. This was a good emulation of the hallmark of the style - Duvel, but was much deeper in color and a looked thicker and thus lacked that devilish deceptiveness. The aroma was a little muddier in the nose as well, with a musty yeasty smell more at home in an old ale. Taste was hopper than expected, with grapefruit citric hops, and a spicy and fruity taste. Unfortunately, these made this beer more like an ordinary pale ale, and much less Belgian. Alcohol content was obvious due to the spicy hot aftertaste and intermittent harsh fumes. The body was medium thick and a little gritty. Despite the obvious malt content, flavor felt blander than the best examples of the style. I fond this falling short of the intended target by a fair bit.

2006 vintage.
Pours a hazy, dark golden orange color with a half finger white head head that immediately settles into a thin ring. Spotty lacing left behind.
Slightly earthy aroma with muted hops subtle spice and sweet malts. Faint floral hops along with some pepper, rye, biscuit, caramel and toffee.
Medium bodied with soft carbonation up front and a decent balance of zesty spice and sweet malt notes. Hints of pepper and cinnamon followed by faint floral hops and spicy rye. I’m also picking up some light fruit which compliments the caramel, toffee and biscuit characteristics. Slight buttery aftertaste lingering into a dry finish. ABV is well masked at 8%.

BIg bottle from Ølbutikken, Copenhagen, The pour is clearish golden with tiny lively yeast stuff swimming around topped with a inch high white head that fades a bit. The nose a fresh with a more hoppy profile than normal belgian ale that seems to be a little more perfumic talking generally. Citric notes and touches of melon and lots of saaz.. Its a pretty heavy aroma. The taste is likewise pretty heavy at first but fades quite quickly leaving the impressions of saaz and giving me chezck associations. Some metallic notes sneaks in to blur the picture a little but not enough to ruin the nice impression. The mouthfeel is medium with a creamy finish. nice summerly beer.
