Brewer’s Notes: We are from the city that invented the skyscraper. We constructed our Urban Pale Ale on a balanced malt backbone, so the citrus hop aroma and crisp flavor can stand tall. I was surprised to learn on ratebeer that this wasn’t a retired beer because it should be.

Canned from Plaid Pantry. Clear medium copper in color. Somewhat grainy nose with a little hoppiness. Dry somewhat earthy hop presence. Light hoppiness with a fairly malty backbone. Decent APA.

Bottle to shaker glass. Pours clear amber, two finger quick off white head. Some lacing and retention. Aroma of grass and pine. Taste is caramel sweet with medium light bitterness. Light bodied, fizzy carbonation, thin mouth feel. Finishes slightly bitter. Tasting notes of caramel, corn, grass and pine. Not that great, very plain.

Can at the Cub’s game. Pours a light amber color with a medium sized foamy head. Notes of cereal, faint cardboard, burnt caramel, and earthy and orange citrus hops. Not great.

Aroma of cereal and light biscuit/crackers, as well as lightly floral and grassy hops. The mouthfeel is light, slightly oily, and well-carbonated. Moderately bitter taste with grainy flavors.

I’ve never wanted to rate a Goose Island beer and think about how they are owned by AB, but with this beer, that’s what happened. First it was a nice enough hop nose, bright citrus, a touch grassy. But the malts were dull, toffee and bread but also a touch buttery, lightly vegetal and overall extremely reminiscent of the old Bud American Ale from a few years ago.

Bottle. Great tasting American Pale Ale, Nice fruity melon like aromas and a nice balance between malt and hops. A great boat beer, with a little extra flavor thrown in.

Bottle from Foods Plus, Plaistow NH. Aroma is hoppy, slightly resin, herbs. Appearance is clear golden, lightly sparkling, with small white head, poor retention and no lacing. Taste is contrary to aroma--more malty and moderately sweet. Palate is medium body with lively carbonation at the tip of the tongue and long mildly bitter finish. Overall, not a heckuva lot going on but slightly above average.
