Reddish pour, whitish head. Aroma of hops, crackers, some tahitian vanilla notes, bready, citrus. Flavor is hoppy and yeasty with a light spice note. Pretty good.

Tulip on tap at the Clybourn brewpub (Chicago, IL). Chose this over Aviator as it just got tapped and this one has been around for awhile. Pours a rich ruby copper hue, reddish glow takes over, light haze with a cakey frothy tannish head atop. Laces well and sticks around. Aromas are gentle sweetness, biscuit, toffee, faint fleeting vanilla. Mellow spice, crisp, touches of citrus. Initial is medium bodied offering oranges and tangerines, touches of cool vanilla, spice, some dryness. Mellow yeasty life, biscuits and bread dough, touch of red fruit. Middle is fruity, cherry and oranges, gentle vanilla. Backend picks up dryness, spice and touches of sweetness. Mellow dryness lingers. Quite well put together. Aroma is a bit light, but a solid darker Belgian with some good balance.

Growler at Hunahpu’s Day 2012. The body is a clear, dark, copper-amber color. A thin, wispy, off-white film forms at the head, leaving virtually no lace. The nose is based in semi-dry bready malt with secondary hints of malted candy. Spicing is very floral, suggesting of hibiscus. The yeast profile is minty, and there’s an odd confectioner’s sugar overtone that reminds me of Necco Wafers. Flavors show more brown candy sugar than the nose lets on, but otherwise maintains a similar profile. Semi-dry, minty Belgian yeast with peppery-floral hibiscus and mild bread tones. The palate sports a moderate body that is mostly smooth, lightly carbonated, and semi-dry. Decent brew. Nothing to write home about.

Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear ruby red with a light brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has sweet grains, spice, vanilla and a bit of backing sweet citrus. Flavor has spice up front with growing vanilla and some citrus that comes out in the finish.
