csbosox (974), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Apr 27, 2008 On tap @ GI Clybourn. Deep dark red with a light head. Aroma is nutty, light chocolate, melanoidin rich and very malty. Taste is very malty and nutty with supporting earthy hops. Very tasty dopplebock.
BabyJoe692 (109), Pickerington, Ohio, USA May 24, 2008 Draft. Reddish-brown in color. Malty sweet aroma. Tastes of caramel and malty sweet. Glouglouburp (1997), Montreal, Quebec, Canada May 20, 2008 In short: Standard Doppelbock
How: Tap at brewpub (Clybourn location)
The look: Clear dark amber body with a small beige head
In long: Dark fruits dipped in molasses. The fruity notes do cover a lot of ground (raisins, figs, cherries, dates and even some bananas and litchis. Tickling carbonation. The beer falls short with a somewhat apparent alcohol and a low-profile hopping. Nothing memorable but this is a beer I can easily get drunk on. How ironic to call such a drinkable strong beer Aviator after all the scandals of drunk pilots (and even astronauts) these past few years. Next to a new “Republican condom” I cannot think of a more ironic product name.
hopscotch (4574), Vero Beach, Florida, USA May 16, 2008 Draft… DLD’08… Sits mostly black in my glass (clear, crimson/orange when held up to bright light) with a small, creamy, off-white head. Fruity, malty aroma with notes of dark fruit and berries. Ester of medium sherry with low acidity. Full-bodied and creamy with dancing carbonation. Good chocolate malt and fruity sweetness with light acidity and decent mineral bitterness. Bittersweet, mineral finish. ogglethorp (800), Ohio, USA May 15, 2008 On tap at Clybourn. Pours a garnet color with a small off white head. Aroma is caramel, dark fruits. Flavor is caramel, dark fruits, brown sugar, hint of cola. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finished sweet. Very nice. Gregis (919), Shawnee, Kansas, USA May 3, 2008 On tap at GI Clybourn. Pours a clear burgundy with a thin, creamy head and patchy lace. The nose is of dark, burnt caramel and candy sugar with a light phenolic note at the finish. Medium bodied and slick with a lightly, dry, bitter finish. There’s a touch of alcohol warmth at the end as well. The flavor follows the nose, more-or-less with a slight drop-off. A solid rendition of the style. Certainly worth trying if you enjoy the style.
