Inspired by the epic skyline of Chicago, Goose Island’s brewers set out to craft Big John; a tall, bold slugger of a stout that stands out vividly against the little soft beers out there. Epic amounts of roasted malt and an addition of cacao nibs give Big John a massive chocolate flavor and aroma. With a body as substantial and black as the building to which it pays homage, Big John is sure to inspire a sense of awe with every sip.

Bottle shared in London - picked up in NYC a few years back. Pours oily black with a foamy brown head. The aroma is big on the dark chocolate, burnt grains, scorched earth. Hugely sweet flavor, with lots of dried dark fruits, sugary dark chocolate, more scorched earth bitterness, some grains. Full bodied, chewy, with fine carbonation. Warming finish with more rich chocolate, some ash, and dried dark fruits. Hefty and very enjoyable.

22 oz bottle from 2011 shared with ebone1988. The pour is a little thin, but is a nice inky black with a decent head of decent khaki color. It falls quickly to a ring. The aroma is huge on cocoa and roasted malt. The cocoa brings a great bitterness to the table here. There is a light licorice profile in the background and the booze creeps up a bit as well. The flavor is really good. It's almost like Bourbon County without the barrel. The chocolate is huge, and the roasted malts offer a wonderful bitterness behind the licorice. Basic, but complex. The mouth feel is incredible. There is a great soft carbonation to go with the heavy viscous mouthfeel. The aftertaste is lingeringly chocolatey and bitter. Really good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle shared with koleminer20, vintage 2011. Aroma is licorice, roasted malt, chocolate. Appearance is black, thick, light brown. Taste is nice, like BC without the barrel, tons of roasted malt, tons of chocolate, real nice. Mouthfeel is perfect, thick with great carbonation and lingering presence. Overall, quite impressive.

Craft Clerkenwell. Bruce’s UK Swan Song. Clear dark amber - brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is airy and semi dry with mild fine carbonation. Sweetish dry dark malts. Mild dark chocolate and roast. Some spice before a light finish. Pretty easy drinking for it’s abv.

Bottle split at Bruce’s farewell drinks, thanks to LKS, 15/04/15. Black with a decent tan siwrl and edgeing. Nose is rich roast, bitter dark chocolate, earthy, spice, charr, toffee fudge. Taste comprises molasses, earthy cocoa rub, light coffee strains, dark fruit rinds, rich roast. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel - a touch cloying, warming alcohol in the close. A touch heavy handed.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s farewell drinks. Many thanks to Leighton for this one. Dark mahogany brown / black coloured pour with lasting tan head. Aroma is nice marshmallow, minty, praline, sugar. Flavour is composed of big rounded roast, coco, mint choc chip, praline, little age, sweet brown sugars, little tangy in the finish. Full and warming alcohol palate is full and velvety, moderate carbonation. Bit of age. But lasted well.

Bottle at Bruce’s leaving drinks, thanks to Leighton. It pours near black with a small tan head. The nose is rich roast, charcoal, umami, sour malts, soy sauce, chocolate and tar. The taste is slick, oily, dirt, fudge, charred wood, umami, soy sauce, warming alcohol, cocoa, chocolate gateaux and booze. Full body, moderate carbonation and slick mouth-feel. A bit viscous and cloying. Good depth, but a touch too much umami/soy sauce action going on.
