COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the epic skyline of Chicago, Goose Island’s brewers set out to craft Big John; a tall, bold slugger of a stout that stands out vividly against the little soft beers out there. Epic amounts of roasted malt and an addition of cacao nibs give Big John a massive chocolate flavor and aroma. With a body as substantial and black as the building to which it pays homage, Big John is sure to inspire a sense of awe with every sip.

Bomber from Beer World. After two days of running around like a chicken in traffic I needed something like this to wind down with. Big and roasty nose comes off the full pour and erupting head to slowly settle a shimmering still black morass. Out of the glass then comes the low tone of the nibs covered in malt. Body is Godzilla big but has but an undertone of alcohol heat up front. Malts encircle and overwhelm the 11.5%. My back began to loosen up about three quarters thru the bottle and I was able to put more wood on the fire. Muck like a black hole, this beers gravitational pull made me consume the entire bottle. My wife told me this morning that I set a record for snoring. I blame the glass foundry! Damn silica magnates.

Bottle to goblet Another RBAG special. Drinking under a super moon while idiots are spitting darts at a fool standing alone in his underwear. Caramel, toffee, milk, and bourbon aromas. Dark reddish brown, no head. Caramel, toffee, chocolate, toasted malt, and oak. Wonderful.

From bomber, courtesy of dpjuart. Wonderful rich and complex aroma. Vapory with caramel, chocolate, Tootsie Roll, mild soy, coffee, oak, and vanilla. Dark black-brown clear with thin tan lacing head. Medium-heavy body with medium carbonation and alcoholic warming. Sweet rich malty with Tootsie Roll, coffee, chocolate, soy. Viscous. Smooth rich malt finish with sweet cocoa after. Delicious.

bottle shared by albatross, thanks bro! pours very dark brown with a small light beige cap, minimal retention and lacing. booze, dark chocolate, roastiness, burnt caramel, red berries and cherries, fairly present woodsy notes, pepper, bitter coffee, bourbony notes - vanilla. moderate carbonation, medium body - oily, grassy-resinous-bitter coffee finish. more on the berry side of things, yet cacao nibs adds a bit of depth to roasted and bittering profile. also balanced. tasty enough and nicely crafted but still kind of forgettable..

Bottle shared by Big John McGinness himself. Pours a still opaque black with a ring of beige bubbles on glass. Aroma is roast, char and chocolate bitterness. Flavor is massive: roasted coffee, vanilla, chocolate and an oak smokiness. Silky mouthfeel. A sipper.

Initially i got a hint of booze aroma the instant I opened the cap and thought "oh boy!" But in the glass this has a wonderful chocolate aroma over a firm maltiness. Tastes smooth and sweet with a little warmth. Much lighter palmate than expected. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Thanks to koelschtrinker for sharing this one! Pours a totally opaque black/brown with brown head. The smell is cocoa, licorice, port, molasses. Taste follows the smell with the addition of some bourbon, a little burn ending dry with a bit of char. Nice fine carbonation, the body is medium/full and slick. Super stuff!

Bomber from BrookFalls Discount with a 12/11/12 bottle date. Pours an inky black with a brown head leaving some spots of lace. Aroma has molasses, cocoa, caramel and some licorice. Somewhat roasty and strong. Taste is of sweet choco/caramel, molasses, some bittersweet bakers chocolate, a bit of grape. Thick and sweet, with the light bitter undertone. Full bodied. Finishes heavy, quite sweet and with some alcohol. Shrug thick and solid. Could use more roast in the body for better flavor.
